Will Steam interfere with mods at all?

Post » Sat Feb 19, 2011 6:56 am

I'm not a steam hater by any means. I love the program and buy all my games on it. I just know it doesn't typically play nice with foreign .exes and all that. The FOSE launcher worked in FO3 because the game didn't use steamworks. I'm afraid that we won't be able to use FOSE in NV, which will severely limit modding potential, unless I'm mistaken. So, do we know if this is the case or not?

Well, VALVe went out of their way to get mods and the like working on Steam before. I think you'll just need to put the files in the new Steam directory.

For those concerned, this will have no affect on mod development whatsoever. Modders will still be able to create and distribute their plugins the same way they have in the past.

The only people who will find adding mods with Steam annoying are those who can't go through an extra couple of folders.

The only concern I had was the FOSE launcher, unless fose will be integrated into the main exe now?

Steam could help with mod distribution, since they host several mods themselves.

Probably, Since it works with Steamworks it probably will.

I'm 99% sure FOSE will work with NV. Well, NVSE will. Valve went out of their way to help get it working with the steam versions of Oblivion and Fallout 3.

I doubt it'll be included in the main exe because NVSE won't be ready until some time after the fact.

Considering that Obsidian is releasing a G.E.C.K. for the game, I'd think they'd try to support mods as much as possible and make it not too difficult to use them. As far as Fallout Script Extender goes, I'd imagine that New Vegas will need a new version anyway, if nothing else, it would probably be necessary to update it to recognize the EXE, a way would also likely need to be found to let it be used with a Steam game, but that could be incorporated into the design of the New Vegas version.

It will be fine. Steam won't get in the way of modding at all. If it would they wouldn't be releasing the GECK alongside the game this October.

A Valve employee went and specifically made a Steam-compatible DLL file for either FOSE or OBSE (Can't remember which right off hand), then told the team how to do that so they could make future versions compatible. If Steam interferes with NVSE or whatever it's going to be called, I bet the same thing is going to happen

Stuff like that is one big reason why I love Bethesda games.
