the amount of bugs/crashes is unacceptable (maybe spoilers)

Post » Fri Feb 18, 2011 9:36 pm

look, i understand with a giant game such as this that bugs are inevitable. but there are certain things that are just too much.

for one, the amount of crashes i get are crazy. I did a clean install of windows and am using brand new drivers for this game, and im crashing constantly. oh, a brand new game you say? they'll patch it you say? except for I get the same crashes with oblivion and fallout 3, and i've been through 3 different computers since oblivion and each one had the same crashes. this is a game engine problem, it is simply does not function properly. bottom line. some people are lucky and dont get them, but they are just that. LUCKY.

second, the bugs within the game itself are so vast, and so many, that i just dont see them patching anywhere near the amount that needs to be fixed. i honestly do not expect the game to run flawless, im really okay with saving constantly and backtracking if i need to, but there are bugs that actually affect the direction I take the story. I actually wont go into too much detail because of the amount of spoilers there would be, but lets just say that I've had to solve many quest bugs by just killing everybody related to the quest and gaining lots of infamy. quests like, "King's Gambit", "Pheeble Will", "Beyond the Beef", all bugged out and literally forced me to just go on a rampage and kill everyone in order to pass/fail it. this svcks because I had to go a route that i just wanted to avoid, but was forced to do if i wanted to continue through the story. there are other bugs i've been encountering but just forget, simply due to the AMOUNT of them. most have been minor and have given them a free pass, but there have been so many, and then these that actually affect my plot decisions, i've just had enough.

there are no other games on the market that are anywhere close to as bad, in terms of bugs/crashes, as bethesda games have been. i love their games, and can understand that with such large worlds and open ended stories comes functionality problems, but with crashes that force me to reboot(major), bugs that redirect the games story(major), just crazy bugs that make you laugh(minor), with the AMOUNT of them and how CONSISTENT they are(major), AND the fact that this has happened with almost every release from bethesda (very major), should hopefully translate to the dev's that there is a VERY LARGE PROBLEM with their products.

I dont normally agree with gamespot (8.5), and I originally thought this would be my game of the year choice (9.5/10), but that number has shrank considerably the more and more i play, due to the amount of bugs/crashes to around a 7 or 8. this isn't the oblivion days anymore, you made fallout 3 and made millions, and should invest that money into new software, and PROPERLY test your bugs before release. obsidian has also had the worst track record for poor releases, and even though i really should have seen this coming I am still surprised that this game actually runs WORSE then fallout 3. how that is possible i dont know, considering the arsenal of tools and $$$ you got from making fallout 3.

again, i understand that bugs are inevitable with such a large world, and on the PC where every single player has a completely different rig im sure it can be a nightmare, but that doesn't stop most every other game company. time and time again, you show that you cant even get the basics down, even with patch after patch after patch. its simply unacceptable.

edit: and here's my dxdiag:

i can't even hear weapon or voice dialog sounds until 30-45 seconds after i fire my weapon or select someone to talk to... i'll be walking around not doing much and then BAM! the game is frozen for like 2-3 minutes or frozen to where i have to hit the restart button on my computer and start everything up again just to have the same thing happen time after time... now idk if this information is credible or not but someone told me that Bethesda only hired like 3 or 4 game testers so that alone should tell you something

it honestly wouldnt surprise me one bit.

been trying to finish king's gambit:

Spoiler
tried to turn in the quest after gaining all kinds of infamy with the freeside, and not only did i have to APPOLIGIZE for killing the king (even though he just went aggro on ME), but i gained a huge amount of infamy with NCR, a faction im tring to join. so much for 50 hours of game time, joining the NCR was the entire POINT of this character. going to have to retry this quest from the very beginning, and if it bugs out AGAIN, ill have to take the assassination route. ANOTHER route i did not want to take.

so amazing how much i have to fight this game in order to get the most basic story elements correct.

I here ya man i paid $50 for the damned thing and it won't even work up to code... and Wal Mart doesnt let you return pc games... or at least i think they dont... maybe they'll get some patches out that will make it a little bit more bearable but as of now i say to hell with this game

I don't like it, but I can understand them releasing an early-beta quality product in order to match advertising or holiday schedules. I can, in principle, overlook that hassle. What's really going to annoy me is if they use Steam only to make a totally futile show of attempting to inhibit software piracy, and do not take advantage of its capability to quickly distribute software updates. There is now absolutely no reason they can't release a patch every few days. They can't fix everything at once, but by God, they can fix something, a little bit every few days, and in so doing, show people who pay them good money that they're intent on getting their product right. I mean, since they're not acknowledging bug reports or posting known issues, they should at least do something to show that they care. If they have a patch release schedule like Fallout 3, this will be the last of their games I buy.

um... "count_roland" you do realize, that they got the first patch out to steam users like...a full day before the 360 and PS3 right?... they had a big article about it...

The game is nowhere near that bad, at least not for me.

I would question the validity of your copy before i agree with such absurd things... as its rather well known that the first pirated copy of Fallout 3 was even buggier than the actual released version.

Ive done kings gambit without any problem, had the game only crash ONCE, and that was before the first patch. ive only had minor problems with the game since then. small animation errors, not that big of a deal. Only two major problems come to mind.

1: Weathered 10 mm pistol, the Silencer's model is missing. so if you put a silencer on it, and equip it your screen goes white cause your inside the giant missing texture "!" square

2: ONE SINGLE [censored]up with NPCs that caused me to screw over my faction standing, also before the first patch. i turned in Kings gambit, and became idolized with the NCR, as i was leaving the ambassador office, an NCR dude comes up to me, and says a like, like the assasins of faction you hate say, and then he starts attacking me. i spend like 5 minutes trying to do the surrender thing so he'll stop, but he never does. so i headshot him, and the whole NCR goes ballistic on me.

besides that... and a few small problems with enemy placement, i only have one other complaint.

Invisible walls.

Oh.
My
God.

[censored] INVISIBLE WALLS. im ontop of a ledge, i dont even have to jump to walk over this hill, and can see my destination ont he other side of it. BOOM INVISIBLE WALL I HAVE TO GO AROUND. i literally would have to spend 20-30 minutes going the LONG WAY around, ebcause a [censored] invisbile wall blocks my path. Fallout 3 didnt have invisible walls. why does New vegas?

Sorry, I have the CE, and a nice receipt for it from GameStop to the tune of 75 federal reserve notes and 76 cents. And a Lucky 38 token that's just heavy enough to leave a good welt if thrown at someone. I also find it difficult to believe that the developer's own forum is swamped with people who pirate its games.

Anyway, have you paid enough attention to notice bugs? I mean, take the VATS trajectory bug I've reported - which, I note, has been around, albeit in a vastly less obnoxious form, since Fallout 3. Did you pay enough attention to notice that you were missing more often than you should've, much less enough attention to run tests with multiple weapons, multiple game setting changes, and multiple weapon tweaks, so as to properly discern the nature of the problem? What of hostile NPC bugs? You noticed one, but what of others? Do you just start shooting at the little red lines on the compass when they appear, or do you take the time to ask if the red lines should really be red, not amber? So on and so forth. There are bugs out there. Lots of them. Replicable ones. If you haven't run into them, you're either very lucky or QC got one possible playthrough correct and you happen to be following it. And one can't help but wonder if you did run into bugs and just didn't notice them.

Yes, they released 'a' patch. Silence since then. And it did not fix a single engine bug. I am worried they're going to have a patch release schedule like F3, where we wait months between mostly useless patches, until one day, they just say 'Th-th-th-that's all, folks!' and leave the rest for modders to fix - if they can. (Armor enchantment stacking with additem, anyone?) Given the near-total lack of communication, it's reasonable to worry. The situation is not helped by happy-go-lucky people who insist on posting the equivalent of 'Wot hump?' without having made any useful contributions to the debugging process.
