A Zombie themed mod setup crash problem

Post » Fri Feb 18, 2011 6:49 pm

Hello all, let me go ahead and put it out there that I know next to nothing related to modding. I know how to put them on, and that is the extent of it. To be honest, I don't even know what a mod list order is. I've been using Fallout Mod Manager for uploading them into the game and it never has asked me for ordering. I am probably just being ignorant and not knowing what I am doing. If I could get a bit of help though, I would really appreciate it.

I am running a Let's Play of a zombie apocalypse and I am beginning to have problems with crashing. The main problems occur when I first load it (Will frequently crash within seconds) and when changing areas(Specifically when trying to quick travel). I also crash occasionally when not doing either of those, just wandering the world.

Here is a link to a video in the series where it crashes midway through, I don't mean this as advertising (Though feel free to enjoy it if you feel so inclined) but as a quick example of the problem.

(At around 4:25)

If someone will mention how to determine mod load order I will post the order. Any other way of fixing this is welcome to be suggested. Here is the list of active mods:

Realistic Battle and Dynamic Combat - Reworks the damage for weapons and damage absorption by armor
Link

Intrusive Invisible Wall Remover - Removes arbitrary invisible walls
Link

A World of Pain - Remaps part of the world a little and adds several new underground areas
Link

Zombie Apocalypse - Take a wild guess
Link

Zombie Mod - Take another wild guess...
Link

DK Bullet Time - Allows the player to slow time down temporarily at the cost of action points
Link

Realistic Heashots - most creatures die from one shot to the head
Link

Populated Casino - Adds more NPCs to the casinos
Link

Populated Wasteland - Adds more NPCs to the world at large centered around towns and cities
Link

There is also a file called FalloutNV.esm that was on by default that I didn't turn off. I have no idea what this does, it was just there when I downloaded Mod manager and I kept it on in case it is important.

I saw the posts on your LP before, interesting goals/mod setup you're trying to run. Anyways, to your questions.

First, FalloutNV.esm is in fact the game itself. ESM = Elder Scrolls Master (just go with it, this game engine is old old old and has been used for many games), this is the master game file that contains all the dungeons, NPCs, world geography, weapons, creatures, quests, etc. Basically, anything you see or shoot or talk to or loot or whatever while playing the game without any mods loaded, you're looking at content that is contained in that file. Do not ever uncheck that... in fact I don't think you can run without it automatically being loaded. In any case, leave it alone as it's kind of important.

Second you've got 2 zombie mods it appears. I don't know either of them at all, but if they edit similar/same things or add many new spawns into the game you could be having issues. Try running with one mod only and see if that cuts down your crashes. At the very least if you can't live without both mods in your game, change the load order of the two of them so the other loser mod (mod that is overwritten) now "wins" the mod conflict battle. Simplified: just flip the order in FOMM by dragging the one lower so that it's now higher than the other one or vice versa.

Third, I've read many comments that Populated Wasteland causes issues, from corrupted save games to outright crashes such as what you're experiencing. Remove it and see how your crash situation improves or if it doesn't change at all.

To get a list of your mods, open FOMM and at the top click Load Order --> Copy to Clipboard. Open a post window in this forum, right click in the text box and hit Paste.

Finally, some general comments on your load order, and ordering in general. For the most part, "large changes mods" should load first (at the top), things that add many things or are the overhaul type. A World of Pain and Intrusive Invisible Wall Remover would qualify from your list as they affect many things or alter the worldspace at large. Small tweaks or changes to items or game settings generally come later so that they can override any common settings that the larger mods also change. This is all general advice, there's always exceptions and tweaks that need to be made. There's a manager on here called BOSS that claims to simplify mod order issues, perhaps you could try that. I've never seen the need for it myself to be honest but apparently many people use it.

Final, final point for you - I run both A World of Pain and the BulletTime mod and almost never crash (never say never with this game engine).

TL;DR --> it's probably Populated Wasteland or one/both of the Zombie mods causing your issues given when it is you're crashing. Transition or on load crashes are usually due to mods that add lots of creatures / NPCs to the gameworld that the engine chokes on at some point. Remove them all, see if your crashes go away and go from there.

Ah, thank you very much for the detailed response. First thing first:

FalloutNV.esm
AWorldOfPain(Preview).esm
Project13 - Populated Wasteland.esp
realistic headshots.esp
populatedcasino.esp
DK_BulletTime_NV.esp
IIWR 2.1.0.esp
Zombie Apocalypse.esp
Zombie Mod.esp
pnv.esp

Total active plugins: 10
Total plugins: 19

This was the mod order previously. I have altered it to be:

FalloutNV.esm
AWorldOfPain(Preview).esm
Zombie Mod.esp
Zombie Apocalypse.esp
pnv.esp
realistic headshots.esp
DK_BulletTime_NV.esp

Total active plugins: 7
Total plugins: 19

I turned off both population mods and the invisible wall remover. I was wondering if IIWR and A world of Pain were having troubles with each other. Either way, those were all mostly aesthetics anyhow. I am going to go try test running it like this now. Thank you very much for your help.

Just a suggestion, as an alternative to populated wasteland, you might want to check out Increased Wasteland Spawns (IWS). It has more options and seemingly more friendly to what you might want. I am assuming you might need more NPCs guarding settlements to counter the zombies. The mod is linked >http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1157189-relz-iws-increased-wasteland-spawns-18/<.
