Crash right off the bat

Hello,

I've installed FNV and have installed its updates today. I've had no problem either starting the game or watching the intro. But then, lo! Every time I complete the very first quest ('Ain't That a Kick in the Head'), just after I've selected 'yes' for the hardcoe mode and just before I open the door to the Mojave Desert, the game crashes and I'm brought back to the desktop.

Since I'm used to that kind of crashing (Fallout 3, although built 'especially' for multi-core computers, was the same in that respect), I assumed a little bit of tampering with the .ini files would do the trick, but it didn't do any good. Besides, each time the game ctd, the files I've modified and saved regain their read-only attribute and, of course, nullify my modifications.

I know I'm no digerati, so I'm asking you -O mighty Bethesda forums-: is there a way to make them lose that attribute and allow me to actually play FNV? :nuke:
