What is the difference between giving a Stealth Boy to Benny, or simply untying him? Either way, the whole Legion attacks the Courier.

I'd like to make Benny escape by giving him the Stealth Boy, so I really need a mod that makes the Legion remain friendly when I choose that option - as if they didn't see what happened. Please, can someone help me with that??
