Once a month Mod Challenge!

Post » Sat Feb 19, 2011 5:31 am

I know I messed up the title description.

First off, this idea is NOT mine. RocheClip38 is the creater of this idea.

Second. I DO NOT support breaking EULAs. NO TALKING about moding an Xbox is allowed on this thread.

Now for the idea.

Ok, on youtube, I would always look a mods for Fallout and feel jealous, real jealous. I was reading a thread about mods then someone said something along the line of this:

"There should be a contest about once a month where modders enter their mods in a contest, and the best one gets turned into an OFFICIAL DLC."

This would be great for Fallout New Vegas!

Thoughts?

Love the idea :-)

They only throw away monthly money not doing it.

I like this idea, but maybe a little smaller. Instead of a full blown Mod to enter, just have a concept perhaps - If you can do a mod to show your idea or part of idea, great; if your skills aren't up to that level then you can enter with words and pictures.

Well, only if the DLC was free.

I wouldn't agree with Bethesda capitalizing on the work of modders.

I don't think it's that easy; Obsidian would have to heavily retool the mods (maybe even program them from scratch) to make them work on consoles. Since PC, 360, and PS3 are all based on different tech, it's not as easy as simply copying a PC Mod onto a Xbox hard drive and plugging it in. It would take quite a bit of work, unless my knowledge of console game development is not what I thought it was.

It may also vary based on what the mod actually does (i.e. how much the engine had to be modified to make the mod work). If it can be done without a whole lot of work, then I'm all for it. Or even less frequently, like every 2-3 months.

My suggestion in the thread he mentioned was for a small fee. Psn and live usually have small fee's to adf content, which has to be approved. Otherwise you could end up with a lot of bad stuff real quick. .99c to 3.99 is reasonable, resulting in around $100000 per pack (at 3.99) at just 25050 sales across 2 platforms. Subtract some dev costs from that, even a small fee to the modders and you should still make some cash. Money is money, and with todays economy, taking advantage of any extra cashflow possible is nothing more than good business.

Besides, your stuff ends up in a few packs, you may end up in Bethesda/Obsidian's pack.

I'd appreciate hearing an opinion, maybe from Mr. Sawyer on this.

I am so glad I have stimulated discussion.

I think a small fee, maybe $1-3 would be fine.

Modders should get a good percent of the money too.

Its a popular idea, I brought it up myself last year, (and last week). But I was probably not the first either, and I never considered making it a monthly event.
My thought was a single contest that results in a top ten fan favorite list of console friendly mods that the studio would agree to publish as an official console DLC.

*(I would expect that any mod ever considered for something like this would have to be signed away completely).

It's not nearly as easy as it sounds. There's huge licensing and QA issues to overcome. Ones that are so huge that this idea will never get off the ground. I mean, practically every month some console player brings up a variation on this idea.

Honestly, it's getting kinda tiresome. If you want mods, get the PC version. By buying the console versions, you gain the benefits of ease of use and hardware compatibility. By getting the PC version you get the advantages of an open platform - namely, mods.
