CTD on the ending cinematic of the game

Post » Sat Feb 19, 2011 1:08 am

*POSSIBLE SPOILERS*

Basically, what happened is. When i finished the game i got a bit through the ending cinematic and i got a CTD "Fallout 3 exe has stopped working" etc. Now, whenever i try to load it again it crashes pretty much as soon as I start the cinematic...

And thoughts how i could fix this? its quite annoying getting this far and having no ending :/

Thanks, Oh and if its any help I have Fellout and gun holster mods installed.

I had the same problem. I fixed it by removing the performance .dll. If you don't have it, then I don't know what could be causing it.

Where would I find this?

By performance. dll he probably meant the. dll that's been floating around the forums that fixes most people's performance problems. You would know if you had it or not. If you do not then it's hard to tell what your problem could be.

Have you installed any mods? I had installed a few mods yesterday, then noticed everytime I went to talk with House the game kept crashing, I think it was due to one lighting mod I installed. After I disabled the mods and went back, it loaded with no problem.

I have disabled my mods and removed the "perfomance.dll" but now my save just ctd's straight away until i put ut back :[ and really i can't go without the dll because my performance relies on it.

Any ideas?

Some mods also overwrite other files, which remains even when you disable them unfortunately. I am not saying it is due to mods, but thats a risk you take when adding them.

You might end up having to reinstall the game, but you should still have your saves. Just reinstall, dont add the mods, and see if you get it to work then.

Thanks for your post on my thread.

The fact is that mods shouldn't do this. I doubt any mods you added would effect the ending. The performance dll file, I also added because frankly the framerate slowdowns were stupid, I will try removing it and get back to you but the popularity of this download highlights that the game was not ready for release, that this was a persistent problem that bethesda/obsidian failed to address.

I can say that I have the same problem, and I have not used any mods. I did download the directx performance fix, but I cannot fathom why that should affect the endings, if it IS causing the crash, then frankly, someone needs to fix this in an official capacity that makes the game stable AND able to run on machines that require this fix. I don't think it's a lot to ask the developers that they maximise the stability of machines that ran fallout 3 without a problem, especially considering I have noticed no significant graphics upgrades.

this game engine has been fraught with problems since oblivion, and yet problems from that game still exist! (anytime you pick up an object off a surface all the remaining objects decide to levitate) or the inherent difficulty with FFDShow? These workarounds have been fixed by modders and tweakers, the developers couldn't address these issues? I'm getting off my soapbox now :)

please let me know if you make any headway, I will likewise do so.

Well. happily a simple re-install seems to have solved it :D. even with the .dll.

Thanks all

So I found removing the Nvidia d3d9 perf fix from my root directory made all the difference, so I got to watch my endings. But I have to choose between watching the endings or stuttering framerates? I can play fallout 3 on it's highest settings without a hitch, but this acts like my pc is five years out of out date? I'm glad I could see my ending videos but this soloution did not make me happy

Thanks for your help, without your message I would not have caught this and remained fustrated for much longer :)

Well, what I am thinking of doing is just removing the .dll whenever I am going to finish the game, which shouldn't be that often anyway.
