Every Bethesda Softwares Game Stuters

Post » Sat Feb 19, 2011 4:52 am

The funny thing is I have never had stuttering issue with neither Oblivion nor Fallout 3. I do have it with New Vegas tho.

I still have F3 installed and I ran it this morning to check if stuttering appeared depending on system configuration changes that took place since I last played F3. But the stuttering is not happening for F3

What is an explanation then? If it's an engine flaw, why is it causing problems in New Vegas but not in F3?

Is there any fix at all to sort it out?

FIXED FOR NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thanks to Monticello

Until Beth or Nvidia get there act together and get it fixed with drivers

1) Download http://rapidshare.com/files/160642187/FPS_Limiter_0.2.rar

2) Download the latest java and install

3) Unpack the limiter to any dir

4) Download the dx9.dll from the following link ( just the download link NOT the advert banners ) , the file is virus clean. Copy the dll into your fallout vegas root directory
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=6LHPT9ZC

5) Run the fps_limiter GUI , select 50FPS or 55FPS , the name and the path of the main game exe. Create Bat

6) Go into your falloutprefs and fallout ini file in documents/my games take off the read only option. Edit the option IFPSCLAMP=50 or 55 depending on your choice!. Then make sure read only is ticked again.

7) Now the downside , because the exe is encryped you will need the NOCD this i cannot help you with. You could try Gam*copyworld

Oblivion does it , Fallout does it and now Fallout Vegas all the same damn engine and they all have this horrible skipping effect. The ONLY thing that cures it is " oblivion stutter remover " and " fallout stutter remover ". Now i'm not talking about microstutter nor am i talking about harddrive loading !

Basically with every step forward or sidewards the screen skips/stutters . For example as i walk skip...skip....skip...skip...skip , i have seen this with my previous system as well with totaly different hardware. When it first happened with oblivion it caused me to near enough go into debt trying to get it fixed thinking it was my system. Only for it to be cured by a mod!. Here's the thing , i've also seen it skipping/stuttering in some of the video trailers that Bethseda has shown with oblivion and this fallout series. No i'm not talking about video trailers in general just the game being played in the video.

From my viewpoint there is either a problem with nvidia and the engine or something else is going on, i had a 8800GTS with oblivion and a Gtx260 now. I cannot reproduce this problem via fraps or any other in game video , so trying to prove it to others via evidence is extremely difficult.

ASRock Penryn1600SLI-110d , Q6600 @ 3100MHZ , Palit GTX260 @ 731/1485/1209 , 8GB , SyncMaster T240 , Creative XFI-GAMER , Windows 7

- UPDATE -
POST 12 & 14 IS THE REASON FOR THE ABOVE , PLEASE READ!

Well, I can eliminate the Nvidia question as I have used Nvidia 8800GTX for both Fallout 3 and Fallout New Vegas and I have no problems at all, it looks beautiful and is very smooth. I am running on Boxx Tech computer Dual Intel X5482, 8 core , 8GB, Win7 x64.

IT WORKS!!!!!!!!! NO MORE FRAMESKIPPING Perfectly smooth YAY :D :D

FIXED!!!!!!!!!!!! THE CAUSE OF FRAMESKIPPING - GAME 64HZ ENGINE FLAW

This Fixes the 64hz bug , it's true what happens. The engine runs at 64HZ/64FPS but the monitor is at 60HZ. So what the game engine does is drop 4frames per second to sync the engine with the graphics card/monitor this is what causes the frame skipping. Only one other game engine does this and thats the one with Doom 3 and Prey !

1) Install FallOut 3 Vegas
2) Copy over the original NOCD exe version 1.0.0.240 , there is no way around this until nvse is made compatible with fallout 3 vegas!. He is also working on the latest nocd exe version
3) Download and unpack attempt_2b into your vegas dir
http://www.newvegasnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=34832
5) Copy over the dx9.dll file into your vegas root dir
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=6LHPT9ZC
6) Run the launcher , it will say detecting new hardware and show a 7800GS. Leave it at that , but set up your graphical options!. Put Water Multisampling to LOW
7) Apply
8) Run the no_stutter.bat

TOTALY SMOOTH GAMEPLAY ( Don't use ifpsclamp )

I'm still curious what kind of stuttering everybody is having. Does it look like this video? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7G375cUecgQ

This behavior has been fixed in drivers for both ati and nvidia

If you're seeing any sort of stuttering on a more micro level than the above video, that's just how graphics cards render (and more noticeable with sli/crossfire)

That word is misused too much because there are different kinds of stuttering. In this case, there is the glitch in the video, the sli/xfire microstutter, a low FPS/choppy framerate due to performance loss, and the load stuttering that occurs as the game streams in data. These can mostly be resolved by (solutions in the same order) running the latest ati/nvidia driver, maintaining 60+ seconds, lowering settings/upgrade hardware, and not much you can do about that last one except maybe a solid state drive.

I read your posts here and on a few other forums too. I'm still trying to wrap my head about what it is you guys are seeing though. Again, watch this:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7G375cUecgQ

The link comes from http://www.tweakguides.com/Fallout3_3.html in the paragraph which discusses the gamebryo synchronization bug

The video is 10 seconds long, it skips ahead 20 times throughout (looks like it skips ahead about 2 frames each time). So 40 out of 600 frames are missing in the video causing an obvious stutter. Assuming that the engine is 64fps on a 60hz monitor as some have said, that would fit perfectly.
I have an nvidia gtx460 and do not see this in FO3 or FNV (looks the same at ifpsclamp=0 and 60). There did appear to be some 'remnants' of it at times but that was corrected with the 260.xx series of drivers

If your stuttering doesn't match the video, I'm not sure what you see. If that mod works for you guys, that's great but since you're limited the FPS to 50-55 it's probably just 'masking' what you see since the frames can be distributed more evenly

Check this out , i was playing doom 3 today and saw EXACTLY the same frameskipping as i did in oblivion , fallout 3 and vegas!. Now i hadn't taken it up with nvidia because i thought they were different engines!.

But

With regard to the problem the OP was referring to: given that the Gamebryo engine is based on the id Tech 4 engine, it might make sense to toss out a line to id Software and get their thoughts about it all. Especially given how people say the Doom 3 configuration option "com_precisetic=0" helped them. Id Software might know about the code paths this option follows for it to might cause the issue.

I hate the developers of that engine even more :(

Gamebryo is definitely not based on ID Tech 4. ID Tech 4 (The Doom 3 engine) is an OpenGL engine, Gamebryo is a middleware and uses Direct X on the PC. Gamebryo is based on Netimmerse which Bethesda used for Morrowind (Morrowind lacked any shader 2/3 effects and did not have a physics engine)

Anyways, I saw your youtube video with the stuttering. I definitely don't have that on my system so I will consider myself lucky. Seems very similar to the other youtube video I posted for FO3 from some years back

I was messing around with vsync earlier and unlike last week, post-patching seems to have disabled the ability to turn it off even if you go in to both .inis and force it off manually. The only way to turn if off is in the driver's control panel. I'm assuming the reason they don't want us to turn it off is because when the framerate goes up the game speed also goes up for some reason. Unless you are around a NPC then the framerate goes to.... wait for it.... 64fps. The 64fps is probably havoc. Anyways, if that's what's causing your issue then why doesn't it effect others? Seems really odd. I think vsync off would correct it at the expense of torn frames, but the game doesn't work properly with it off unfortunately

I'm surprised that more people aren't bothered by this "stutter". It's annoyed the crap out of me since Oblivion.

Also, what just came into my mind is that, if you have a monitor with a refresh rate about 60 Hz, couldn't you simply set the FPSClamp to 64 to fix it? I'm on a laptop, so my fps isn't constantly 60 so I won't always notice it, but either way, my monitor only will go up to 60...
