[WIPz] Heavy Plasma Awesomefied

Post » Sat Feb 19, 2011 1:45 am

Ahh, the Plasma Caster and Plasma Defender. Nostalgic resurrections of the old-style Fallout plasma guns. Good times.

Except, to be quite frank... they haven't aged well. At all. The Plasma Pistol looks downright generic and bland, like some run of the mill energy gun, while the Plasma Caster looks like some sort of torture implement.

A while ago, I got a notion to do some heavy mesh splicing and redo them both in the "mad scientist laboratory creation" style of plasma weapon introduced in Fallout 3. Today, I decided to go forth with it.

Keep in mind that it's very Very WIPpy.

The three critical parts I have to work around are the positions of the microfusion cell, and the two grips. I spliced the foregrip from the Minigun, and am still mulling about what to do with the main grip.

I obviously have yet to put in the portholes and aperture stabilizers. It'll have the glowing chamber interior with visible plasma arc as well, natch. I'm considering doing some splice work to put on that awesome octo-radial thingy that the Multiplas has on it as well. I also need to completely redo the wiring (Go Go Gadget Loft Tool!)

I never liked the look of the Caster. Good to hear you're working on improving it :goodjob: Enlarging Bethesda's version of the Plasma Rifle seems like the logical thing to do, and will propably result in more aesthetically pleasing look than with the current model.

Of course wheter i'll use it or not depends on WMX compatibility :hehe:

I'll make it WMX-compatible once I get the base model finished. :P

I may be renaming the mods, and possibly bugging T3T for some re-draws.

I'll probably retexture it as well. I have a PSD with layer masks on it that allow me to change the colors of a lot of parts. I used it to make the red chamber for the Q35 retex, and also for the brown/gold retex on the Multiplas.

I'm thinking green for the Caster and blue for the Defender.

Definitely not my cup of tea. I agree that both classic weapons could use some more crazy, but this takes away the entire aesthetic and makes it a blown up plasma rifle.

That said I'll keep an eye on this just to see how the model develops.

The caster is a good start, Needs some portholes a la the plasma rifle. Also maybe some kind of cage or truss surrounding the forward bulb.

Well, I was thinking modkit icons, but now that you mention it, it would need a redrawn weapon icon...

As stated, it's very WIPpy. I have yet to put on the port holes and the other bits on the muzzle ampuole. I'm trying to work out how to make the MF cell inlet fit right now, it's an open-hull mesh right now, just provisionally in position.

Well, even though I absolutely adore the original weapons, I would help you.

An update. http://img199.imageshack.us/img199/2204/casterwiprender2.png

I rotated the frame around 90 degrees because I want to try and add a port hole on the top, angled to face you so you can see the plasma arc inside.

I still need to do the cables, and figure out what to do with the topside trigger. And of course cut out the portholes so you can see the plasma arc glowing inside. :)

Wow, nice model, And it quite resembles the plasma pistol and rifle, much better than the vanilla model. keep up the good work.

After realizing that the bottom aperture stabilizers (cylinders on the port holes) were below the bottom most part of the frame, I had to nix them. They're not meant to bear the weight of the weapon when it's placed on the ground. ;)

I "desynchronized" them to make for the rapid-fire weap-mod that it'll have, the "synchronized aperture stabilizers". Since they're big honkers compared to the ones on the plasma rifle, they'll be their own distinct mod kit.
