Yes. You can Ally and join any of the Major Factions and even some of the Minor ones as well. (BoS is minor now, but you can become a Paladin in the order).

You can't "join" them, because that would insert you into their chain of command. You are a freelancer/civilian the entire time, but they treat you well.

If you joined the NCR, they'd have to put you on patrol or guard duty or something similar and you'd have to live out of a camp. You couldn't quest anymore.

Well that's a shame you can't join any factions... after the whole interview stuff I got really excited. I have a question though:
Recently I was doing a quest for the NCR, and I found a piece of their armor. I put it on, window popped up that I'm dressed as a member of the NCR. Then I tried to call help through the Radio they gave me and it told me that I can't call for support because reputation with the NCR is too low. It's due to me wearing the NCR armor, I figured as much.
So it there any way I can get the armor by any official means, so that it doesn't affect this rep stuff? It's kind of bummer that I'm helping NCR, I want to join them and I can't even get/wear their armor...(taking it off every time is still dumb if you ask me)

You can join some of the minor factions. For instance, the Brotherhood.

Not without mods, which are PC only. There's already a mod which has all the various NCR and Caesar suits without the disguise script attached. However, I'm pretty sure that any rep you earn while disguised will carry over, which means that if you help the NCR while wearing NCR armor, eventually you'll be able to call in NCR support while wearing some snazzy NCR armor.

Dang, so being disguised makes the game think your rep is low? That explains the one bug I had. BLAST I suspected it, but thought "no, couldn't be."

You're pretty much a civilian contractor.

Well, that depends what you mean by join. Take House, for example. You officially become a form of lieutenant (something more or less stated in the ending slides). I haven't played through the Legion or NCR campaigns yet so I can't comment on them.

I guess what I mean by join is to be officially part of that faction. Like putting on the armor and not be considered a disguise!
