Pretty basic GECK UI question

Post » Fri May 27, 2011 5:55 pm

I'm new to modding this engine, but not game content in general. I've somehow got the idea to do an alternate start mod, since I was really disappointed with New Vegas's chargen (especially after Fallout 3's, which was awesome), but that's not really relevant to this post.

I've been messing around with the GECK and can get around it just fine. I'm a big ui/interface kind of person, and there's just this small thing that can't be right: Every time I duplicate any object and go to move it, the GECK prefers the non-selected objects for mouse interaction, meaning that if I click and drag I get a selection box. If I instead select the original objects I can interact with them properly, so it seems to be related to the object's internal creation order influencing the z-order or somesuch. Is this the normal behavior?

I don't have anything where I care about whether I'm using the original or the duplicate yet and I can get through the tutorials fine, but this because a much much bigger issue when I want to select, duplicate and move multiple objects. With a single object could simply edit its position manually from Cell View -> Edit if I really needed to, but this is unavailable for a multi-object solution. Copy+Paste works I suppose, but it's far from ideal since the objects appear directly in front of the camera (which if you're dealing with entire rooms is probably a fairly large distance from where you're working)

So is this just a quirk of my current hardware setup/drivers? Is there any way I can comfortably work around it? There doesn't seem to be anything in the keyboard commands to move objects or any way to separate the select/move keys or move without dragging directly on the object. I don't see an option to freeze the selection either or anything else I can use, so I'm kind of at a loss for any way to use the duplicate function effectively.

You can press "F" or "G" to raise and lower which object the mouse pointer is looking at when you try to select it. Once you duplicate the object, try those keys and see if the mouse pointer turns back into it's 4-cross so you can drag them around.

Cheers,

Hrm. Well that works well enough if you're using snaps I suppose. Would be much better if there were a key that moved stuff back down the exact amount G moves it up, but it'll do. Thanks.
