What if the social experiment was to have Nicolas Cage movies playing all the time. A sample vault terminal could be as follows:
Day 1: Bombs fell today, I barely made it to the Vault. Everyone knew it was coming, but it still is such a shock. I found the rooms comfortably sized. When I entered my room the TV was already on. About an hour later a movie flipped on. It was an older movie, I remember my Grandparents telling me about them. I wonder if they made it to a Vault. On a side note I tried to turn the TV off and the button wouldn't work. I also found no visible cord to unplug and the TV was bolted down. Strange note, I also found a 10mm Pistol with a single bullet in the chamber in my nightstand. I asked around and everyone else had one too. I wonder what it's for, personal protection?
Day 3: Things are going pretty badly. Almost half the Vault has committed suicide or went crazy. The damn movies won't stop, they're all so terrible! Why do they cast Nicolas Cage as a badass! He clearly is not one! All attempts to disable the TV's have been failures. One of the Vault Technician tried to disable the TV in a room, as soon as he opened the casing the doors slid shut and TV exploded. Another Vault Tech said he's close to finding a way to cut the power to the TV by splicing into the circuit board and shutting down the power in the rooms. Sure it will make things less than comfortable, at least it will handle the TVs. The Overseer has locked his door and won't answer to any calls, I don't blame him.
Day 6: SUCCESS!!!!! Earlier today I was sitting in my room, when the lights shut off. For the first time since I've been here I could hear myself think. THE TV'S WERE OFF, THANK THE GOD ABOVE THE TV'S WERE OFF. I managed to run a cord from my terminal to an outlet in the community area. Things are starting to look up.
Day 7: Words cannot describe the pain I feel right now. After finally shutting off those damned TV's this Vault had another trick up it's sleeve. Wall panels in all the Hallways, Rooms, and in the Common Area slid back to reveal TV screens. They then flickered to life and begun broadcasting those movies. And to add insult to injury the sound is now broadcast on full blast over the Vault intercoms. I've decided that I died on the way to the Vault, and I'm actually in Hell, and Nicolas Cage is the Devil.
Day 9: Of the roughly 200 people that came into this Vault, only 10 are still alive. No one speaks, they all just sit there with a glazed look on their eye. Either staring off into the distance, or at their nightstands with their only ticket out of here in it. We tried storming the door, but found it sealed shut. One of the 10 people was a Vault Technician. He tried everything to open the door but failed. We stormed the Overseer's office in hopes of him letting us out. Once the Vault Tech hacked the Terminal giving him access to the door, we entered to find the Overseer dead with a holotape on him.
"I didn't know, God help me I didn't know. They told me all the Vaults were built to be social experiments, and only a few were control groups. When I asked them what ours was they told me we'd figure out soon enough. Well here I am 3 Days in and I already know. I've tried everything to shut the damn TV's off, but I don't have control. I know that they won't believe me if I tell them I didn't know and I can't control it. I don't even care anymore. I also figured out why they gave us the guns, to see how long we can make it. Well, here's to making it to the 3rd day *gunshot*."
Day 10: Well, I'm the last one left. Carlos was with me but I woke up to find him in his room clutching his 10mm. I'm the last one, and the movies still won't stop. I raided the liquor supplies, there's enough alcohol here to keep me busy for a little while.
Day 23: I don't know what to do with myself. I had a dream the TV's went off. After that I found a door leading to another Vault, they explained it was all a test to see if someone was strong enough to be their leader. Just before I stepped through the door I woke up. I've never felt more helpless in my life.
Day 24: I've had enough. I'm going to shut down the main reactor. There's no way that the damn TV's can be on after that, sure I'd have no running water, power, or fresh air, but at least the TV's will be off.
Day 24 B: Some TV's are still on!! I've decided nothing I can do can shut off the TV's. I'm gonna try the front door one last time.
Day 24 C: YESSSSSS!!!!!!! This is my last entry every! The original plan by the Vault Tech Designers was when the reactor is shut down power to the door is also shut down, but the locking mechanism runs on emergency reserve power. But almost by some act of God the wires were mixed up, meaning power is still running on the door mechanism, but the locking mechanism is useless. Finally after almost a month of hell I will now walk into the post-apocalyptic world. Wish me luck, and anyone who finds this, I will be heading to Dino Dee-lite Motel.
