I Have A Query About The Map Size

Post » Fri May 27, 2011 6:09 pm

I've been having a discussion with some of my mates about Rage & the one thing we would all like to know is how big is it? Logic would dictate that the world map would have to be bigger than fallout3/new vegas as Rage is partly a driving game. So if you've got a car then you would think they would give us a larger map to compensate. Fallout 3's map I'm told was about 12miles approximately & Oblivion was slightly larger. So has anyone got any intel on the size of Rages world map or has that information not been released yet to us hungry Rage/post apocalyptic game lovers?? Thanks in advance for any help putting my question to rest. :tops:

I guess it would be much smaller than Fallout 3. There's no fast travel, the game is supposed to be about 15 hours long. And MegaTexture is not really suitable tech for very large world.

Errr... what? Megatexture is suitable and was made for large worlds. Where is everyone getting this 15 hour game length. Please provide source. Smaller than fallout 3? possibly, nothing shown yet tells you how large the maps are but Megatexture is meant to create large open worlds. Fast travel? Who told you it doesn't exists. Nobody said it does but doesn't mean you disregard it's existence.

Textures can measure up to 128000×128000 pixels[3] and will also be used for in-game models and sprites, etc. and not just the terrain. -wiki

don't know how true this is but this is 3 times the size of what Quake wars was and Quake wars had pretty large maps. I don't know how big the maps in fallout 3 are but Rage maps will definitely be substantially large.

While MT is suitable for large worlds, it's not suitable for 'VERY' large world. 128k x 128k pixels texture is not big enough for covering like 10 square miles map. Technically you can, but textures will look too blurry. And this is already one of the technical problem of RAGE.

Tim Willits says there's no fast travel around 11:00 of this video.

No fast travel, alright, 15 hours according to the article sounds like just for the main campaign, not the other random stuff around. Plus 15 hours for an FPS is above average in today's day and age, where games don't even last 6 hours.

The image you are showing me is ripped from a video. There are hundreds of effects going on there that are making everything look like crap not to mention the video compression. Plus it might be a design choice because they have to maintain a level of detail on the characters or other objects. Also there might be methods by which two Megatextures could be used on the same map so when one ends the other begins. Obviously causing some loading and texture streaming problems to deal with especially on the consoles but could be possible.

I haven't played fallout 3 or oblivion but is one single map with out any load screens really like 12 or 15 sq miles? or is just that the entire world with different regions that big?

tehres a lot of dungeon crawling in it. the insides of buildings and metro's and such. which all have load scereens between.

This si why i dont get the megatexture cant do a big game argument. if sections of the game are isolated for eachother, you use a different map for those areas.
