performance questions

Post » Tue Feb 01, 2011 1:11 pm

I'm having a problem with slow downs during certain scenes. The slow downs tend to occur when three or more npc characters are on the screen at the same time, typically during battles.

The game turns into a slide show. It weird though, because it goes from smooth to slide show. Most games I play with motion intensive scenes cause a noticeable decline in fps but don't drop so dramatically. It feels like something on my pc isn't agreeing with a specific technology that the game uses when these scenes occur?

Sometimes in non motion intensive scenes it happens to, when I was inside the hotel with slim prim and I looked at the front of the gangsters car where the lighting shining on the hood my game took a huge performance hit. If I looked away from the hood it was fine despite having multiple NPCs walking around in view.

Just curious if anyone else was having these problems and if they had a solution. The game set my graphic setitngs to ultra by default, I haven't touched them yet.

I'm running windows 7, ati 5850 , 8 gigs of memory, and a phenom II x4 965 (3.4 ghz) cpu.

PS. I made sure my video drivers were up to date.

I've done a little research on the .dll and it sounds like a bunch of people are having success using it.

I'll give it a go and let you know how it works out.

I found a more up to date thread below.

So, I did some initial fps tests using Fraps before using the .dll.

primm hotel - 10 or more npcs wandering around.

I saved a game facing a bunch of npcs and loaded the save spot for each test and watched the fps for a few moments and recorded my findings below.

test1
ultra settings option 12fps
4aa
15af

test2
ultra settings option (no noticable change)
0aa
15af

test3
ultra settings option (5 - 10fps increase)
0aa
0af

test4 WITH .DLL (using http://www.newvegasnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=34970) beta 2 for 5000 / 6000 series. selected 5800.)
no less than 50 fps, typically bouncing around 60fps!!

Simply amazing... I was skeptical that something as small as a custom .dll could make such a difference but it did!
