Australia once again shafted on STEAM

Post » Wed Feb 02, 2011 12:26 am

I'm currently looking at the steam price for Australia $89.95 USD (Yes! that is USD not even Australian dollars!), compare that to the US (and almost the rest of the world) at $49.99

Talk about money grubbing! Parity pricing on digital distribution or don't bother (as the store bought version actually costs LESS here after currency conversion!!)

Eurpoe ain′t spared bad pricing either, steam still do that goofy thing where it takes the dollar price and just take the same in Euro, despite the fact the Euro is much stronger then the dollar.

Yeah, I went to all the effort (not much) to register on here just to whinge about it.

I am sick and tired of all the crapola that goes on in regards to such things. For once I would like a honest question answered about who is responsible for this.

Is it steam ?

Or is it Bethesda ?

On one hand its a direct money grab, on the other hand its a total dis service to steam as a medium for game delivery.

http://www.play-asia.com/paOS-19-71-99-49-en-15-%22fallout:%20new%20vegas%22.html

$55 AUD bucks to get it sent via mail from Asia....

http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=fall+out+new+vegas&x=0&y=0

Or I could just buy it from Amazon for $49 dollars...

If I was Bethesda I would be ashamed to be caught ripping off people so blatently.

Is it possible that the Australian govt. taxes game developers and distributors in such a way that they HAVE to raise the prices in order to sell the game in a fiscally responsible way? I don't know one way or the other in this case, but different govts. do charge importers to bring in other types of goods. In this instance, knowing that the Australian govt has issues with the content included in games, perhaps they have a strict tariff policy in regards to this product.

My point is that the taxes on the physical copies of the games could be prohibitive enough as to require raising the prices elsewhere... As posted here, the prices on games are OFTEN higher in Australia, so that alone should indicate that if it IS the game company making the prices higher, it's not JUST Bethesda or Steam that should be held responsible.

If I may quote the Civ IV Civilopedia, Everything is worth what is purchaser will pay.

The Aussie dollar is about the same as the Yankee Dollar. I see EB games Australia pricing new games at about the same price. They think you'll pay that, so thats what they'll charge.

Its not Steam thats Shafting you, its the publishers. Write them an angry letter.
