I'm seriously thinking of cancelling my pre-order

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 2:04 pm

I have Fallout New Vegas Collectors Edition on instore pre-order at Gamestation, but I have just found out I will have to install Steam.
This means I am seriously thinking of cancelling my pre-order. I hate publishers that force third party [intrusive spyware (ish)] software on their customers.

Fine if I wanted to buy through Steam, but I don't. I want to go to the shop come home with my big box of shiny stuff and install and play. I in no way shape or form do I want to install software that I don't want or will ever want.

Bethesda and Obsidian you have [censored] up royally by making Steam a compulsory aspect of this release and you may lose out on my £50.

Steam is somehow worse than the equal, if not worse, than GfWL?
The only difference is that steam has a more obvious UI, it's much nicer than GfWL.

If you want to give the message that gamers prefer GfWL over Steam, I'm afraid I will have to kill you.

People rally against DRM because it's moving us closer towards the locked in, tightly restricted environment of consoles. Switching to them because of it is like taking a private jet instead of a car to lower your pollution - you've missed the point.

Oh so it's like people feeling like they HAVE to play on console just to feel like they can play without Third Party Software?

I am against being forced to use ANY 3rd party software that I do not want or need.

Haha, Apart from Oregon Trail, Fallout and Fallout 2 (Which I recently got in June) are my first PC games, so I'm still learning PC controls and point and clicks xD

No, it's probably hard to explain to somebody who's never experienced or appreciated it. One of the big things behind PC gaming is freedom - if your game lags, you can turn it down. If you don't like using a mouse and keyboard, you can use a joystick, controller, nintendo power glove, motion recognition system, or whatever the heck you like, without the game having to specifically support it. If you don't like how something looks, generally you can change it - similarly, if something doesn't play well, you can often change it to your preference. If you buy another HDD, you don't have to worry about any sort of issues, if you buy an entire new PC, you can be sure your saves will work and carry over all of your achievements and scores. DRM takes away many freedoms - be it the inability to reinstall as many times as you like, a lack of LAN support, changing hardware suddenly means the game doesn't think you're you anymore, and so on.

Consoles, on the other hand, are restricted and locked in by definition. That's not entirely a bad thing, but to people used to almost complete freedom, it's very jarring. We fight DRM because we want to be LESS like consoles, not more like them.

Steam is a good example of digital distribution done right, DRM done right (but don't mistake that for me saying that the DRM is good. It's just less bad than others), and generally a gaming community system done right. It's a very nice service, and better than just about anything else - it all depends whether you can accept the small amount of DRM, or whether you require none at all. I don't think we're going to see the latter again, so I accept steam for what it is - about as friendly as it can be without being ineffective.

You're not going to cancel your pre-order, you're going to install Steam and gripe while it loads, and then you're going to play the game and enjoy it.

I can sympathize with not wanting additional third party software installed on your system. But I bit the bullet a while ago with Steam, and it's pretty painless at this point. You can even set Steam to never go online while you're playing a game.

Steam is just one of those things you have to accept in this day and age. Just like there are certain other pieces of software you are pretty much forced to own if you do any kind of extended work on a computer: An OS (usually Windows), Microsoft Office, Adobe Reader, Flash Player, some kind of Anti-Virus, etc. etc.

Are you honestly telling me you only just found out about steam being required on this game ? even with the countless anti steam threads being posted on here virtually every other week ? I'm sorry is it just me or do I smell another veiled "We hate steam" thread going on here.

I only looked at this forum for the first time yesterday. I generally stay away from publisher/developer forums as they can be full of fanbois that dislike any disparaging remarks what-so-ever.

And yes I only found out about the Steam requirement. I actively went looking for information after trying to find out about another upcoming games DRM (Football Manager 2011, as they cocked it up big time a couple of years ago) and thought I'd find out what F:NV was going to use.

I wouldn't mind Steam being an option, as long as there was another way. But to be forced to use a 3rd parties software is just plain wrong.

That's the whole point, I shouldn't be forced into accepting it.

But you can choose to totally ignore all of those if you so wish. I use all of them, because they actually improve my experience of using a computer, Steam does not.

Why are you so against steam ? All I keep hearing about is that steam is the devil incarnate and its all rubbish. All it is is to make sure you cant copy the game and then take it back to the store and get your money back. If this was about bad internet connections I could understand. It's not the only reason you dont want it on there is because you dont want it. Don't try acting all tough saying your not going to play the game when we all know you wont because you like the rest of us want to play the game and if that involves a bit of discomfort so be it. If I had spent millions creating something I'd want to protect it wouldn't you ?

Sorry you feel this way OP but the decision has been made to use Steam. There is an already open topic on this subject so let's continue there.
