CTD (Not caused my a mod!)

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 12:00 pm

Hi guys got a problem here and a bit unsure on what it might be that's causing it the only thing I am sure of is that it's not the fault of a mod.
Ain't played NV in a while and decided to come back, when I tried to fire it up because my last play was on a larger monitor the resolution was wrong so I tried to use the launcher to I could change it and I think that's where my problem started...using the launcher activated steam and that started downloading an update (I'm using the 3gb patch which bypasses the need on steam to be running) and now since then every time I try to launch using the falloutNV.exe or nvse_loader.exe I CTD, I tried using a back up on the falloutNV.exe before the update but still I have the same problem...unfortunately I don't have a full backup of my data folder I can revert to so I'm in a bit of trouble and would REALLY REALLY like to avoid starting again as I do believe I have put around 100+ hours into my current save.

Can anyone help?

Hmmm. Would the 3gb create an incompatability with the latest patch? Check if there is an update for that. Also, try running the game with NO mods checked, just the base game/DLC. That way we can be 100% positive it is not content related.

Have you tried using the 4gb loader on the NVSE page:

Not a clue, the latest version of the 3bg enabler is not compatible with NVSE so using that ain't really an option :( as for deactivating all mods that was actually the first thing I tried and still the same problem...agghhh it's my bloody laziness which caused this because I couldn't be bothered to swop monitors I just tried to use the launcher to change res forgetting FOMM can do it as well :( soon as the steam app launched things just went wrong

Now gave this one a try as well...now a CTD but just a fail to start...the launcher thing came up and when I clicked "play" it acted as if it was gona load and then just nothing

you are launching the game with nvse_loader.exe, right? As long as you are logged into steam, or in offline mode, you don't need the Beth launcher.

Yes I'm using the nvse_loader.exe and it's when using that I get the CTD and that only started happening when I used the original Bethesda launcher to change the resolution and steam started downloaded the update, before all that it was fine...but now regardless on what I use the game won't start, nvse_loader.exe = CTD on start up and FalloutNVLauncher.exe = game just failing to start no CTD

Do you have Dead Money or any of the pre-order packs? If so, where are they in the load order in FOMM (Assuming you've installed it). I'm pretty sure they re-enable themselves, and trying to load a file with masters (Like how all data files have FalloutNV.esm as a master) before the actual master can cause crashes. Some weapon balance changes were made with the newest patch, changing FalloutNV.esm and possibly altering it's position in the load order, so the issue might be there

Have you checked your load order? When Steam updated my game, the main FalloutNV.esm was no longer top of the list and if this file isn't loaded first you're guaranteed a CTD.

No I don't have dead money installed just the packs that came with the game and which have been running from the start with no problem, the update did however change the position of the fallout.esm but I had checked that and moved it back to the top before I started the thread and it changed nothing...some progress has been made though and as I thought it was the update which was causing me the problem I have manage to revert back to version 1.2 and using the latest version of nvse upon launch it gave me a error message telling me to update to the latest version of fallout so I used a older version of nvse ver6 to be precise and the game fired up and loaded as normal.

What I cant understand though is the update was automatic and through steam so how is it possible for it to completely mess up my game and now I have no way of trying to update again because it wont start automatically and I don't see an option to start it manually ontop of that seen as its only available on steal I cant download the update from the net...so yeah the game might now be running (which is obviously a good thing) but I'm still stuck and have a problem of being unable to update and take advantaged of all the fixes that come with it
