Getting Beasty without equipment.

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 2:45 pm

So I'm pretty smart, and I'm college educated. Now I want to work on my body. I am not fat or out of shape per-se but I will be if I dont start working out more often. Growing up with ADHD I was on Ritalin which is an appetite depressant, as such I didnt eat much so I couldn't gain any weight to turn into muscle. I pretty much gave up on having an atheletic body. Yet as of late Ive started to put on weight, and that means that I can turn it into muscle.

The problem is that I lack the funding for workout equipment, but I also know that it isn't necessary. Does anyone have some tips on how to get ripped without equipment?

You can do good workouts just by doing sit ups and press ups. Look up cardio workouts on youtube. It's all free. I also go swimming three times a week which is great exercise and keeps you toned.

Most abdominal workouts don't require equipment. Use your own weight + gravity as a method to work out.

You might want to look into http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plyometrics.

Push ups and pull ups are always the good standbys. But the key to muscle development is always reaching a point of "muscle failure" with the http://www.military.com/military-fitness/fitness-test-prep/pt-pyramid.

I would lastly suggest that you have a physician give a good look over as well.

You won't really get ripped with bodyweight exercises only unless you have great genetics. Although it depends on your definition of 'ripped' (scrawny with abs? well built at a low bodyfat?)

I was on Ritalin from age 6 till age 13, and I was overweight as a child. I don't ever remember it being an appetite depressant.

Also, what others have said: Push-ups, Sit-ups, Pull-ups, swimming & jogging. All of those, if combined into a good exercise schedule alongside healthy eating habits, can and will make your body pretty muscled. You won't be absolutely ripped, that DOES require weights, but people will certainly be able to tell you work out.

I did the daily 16 for some time. I'll tell ya right now, sit-ups will NOT ever, EVER give you six pack abs. Ever. Like seriously, ever. They work the upper abs and hardly touch the lower abs at all. Do leg lifts as well! Lay flat on your back with your hands under your butt, palm down. Put your feet together, keeping your legs straight and lift them six inches off the ground. Bring your feet up creating an 'L' type shape with your body then back to the starting position of 6 inches. If you don't feel the burn, go as slow as you can.

Good stuff guys. I want to start building a solid core, then get the arms and legs beefy.

Aw yes Dietary as well. Though I do eat pretty well anyhow. What foods are especially conductive. If its proteins, I got it locked. I live in NEBRASKA!

Side effects affect people diferently. For me the appetite suppresent effect hit me hard. I was never annorexic, but I was consider underweight for a long time. Just could not gain weight.

Are you really wanting do go without any equipment, or just without spending a lot of money on equipment? For example rope, sandbags and cinderblocks are fairly cheap, and rocks are usually free! There are a number of books and websites dedicated to workouts with little to no equipment, there are a few I like that show you to make equipment from $20 worth of stuff from the hardware store.

I'm in your same situation (minus the ADHD), but I used to be really in shape. Now I'm skinny but I'm kinda flabby, and it really makes ya feel bad about yourself.

What you want to look up is bodyweight and resistance (pushing against wall and stuff) exercises. Ross Enamait's http://rosstraining.com has a bunch of stuff about low cost training and http://www.rosstraining.com/articles/equipmentandlinks.html. He's got a few books, with http://www.rosstraining.com/nevergymless.html being of particular interest to you.

http://www.exrx.net/ can be a handy resource, too. It has some pretty thorough http://www.exrx.net/Lists/Directory.html on exercises and muscles.

The disclaimer I should probably attach to this is that I've ended up not really applying the knowledge I've gathered over the years. But that's 'cause of various things in my life, and doesn't invalidate what I know and am sharing :).

Don't really need equipment. Run for a mile or 2 every other day and do the pyramid exercise mentioned above.

There are lots of great bodyweight exercises, but the truth is that they're just not the complete picture, and many of them will 1) become useless to you if you cannot add resistance, or 2) be way too difficult to perform until you've built more of a base of strength which would more than likely involve the use of equipment. Don't get discouraged and NOT train due to a lack of equipment (though this doesn't seem to be a problem for you), but I honestly wouldn't look at it as a long term solution. You at least really want to get ahold of an olympic barbell and some weights, and more than likely a bench and some sort of rack you can use for squats. If you can't swing the investment in the equipment or a gym now, you should at least think about moving toward that direction as quickly as possible if you really want to get serious about your training.

Pushups, situps, planks(toes on ground forearms along ground body in a straight line), run, all things you can do to stay in shape. I can post alot more when I get home (on phone at work)

Dont feel like typing out all the descriptions. Also while I said them I dont recommend situps. Bad for you in reality according to army anyways.

Push-ups, pull-ups (can be replaced with dumbell workouts), situps, lunges/squats, running.

It could've been that your mom was stuffing your face overfeeding you.

Edited to not sound harsh.
