A Noob question about dedicated servers

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 5:45 pm

So I know this might sound silly to some, please don't flame me I admit I'm new this, but I was wondering what kind of specs I'd need to run a dedicated brink server

I have run a dedicated server before - killing floor, UT 2004, but those were old games on a beefy PC.

The reason I'm asking is I have a "gaming" notebook, a dell xps 17 with an i7 @ 2-2.9ghz, 6gb ram and a gts555m. Would I be conceivable able to for the hell of it run a server off that for friends to play on occasionally?

Sorry if it's a dumb question, and thanks for any replies!

If you're planning on running a dedicated server off your PC, then I'd just skip the idea entirely. You might as well rent a dedicated server from a server provider if you want to run your own server. If you absolutely HAVE to run a local server, then you'll need God-like internet and a monster computer.

well specifics...what are we talking here

what minimum upload speed and CPU should I be using? Also dedicated servers don't really use GPU processing right?

the notebook I bought has 6gb RAM and a 2.9ghz i7 is that too little?

guess it depends how many players... sure you can run a server and play off it with a couple other players but don't expect to run a 16 player server + play from it unless you have a high performance desktop, ie: 4Ghz i7 Quad with 8GB ram.

also keep in mind I'm only planning on running one instance of the game and no other games. it wouldn't be a PERMANENT dedicated server I'm just trying to see if it would be feasible to do when i had a bunch of friends together and wanted a private game

Then you could just play LAN.

Then you'd still need really good internet. The farther away from somebody you are, the better internet you need when running a dedicated server off your computer. This is because Dedicated Servers provided by Server Providers are entire machines built specifically for this purpose, but your computer is not. It is unlikely that you'll be able to host a server for yourself as well as up to 15 other people at the same time.

I understand that...as I said I've used a dedicated server before, I had one running off my laptop for killing floor for a few months and that ran fine.

a file server would have to be built specifically for being a server but not a gaming server....

but what kind of upload speed are we talking? over 6mbps?

It depends on the number of people you're hosting for. I'm fairly sure most dedicated servers use a T1 connection which is like 1.544 Mb/s which is able to easily hold 32+ players at once for most games. So 6 Mb/s is more than enough for Brink which has a maximum of 16.

I could be entirely wrong though. I'm just basing this information off of what I've seen in past games. I don't know if my facts are entirely correct though.

In any case, so long as you have REALLY good internet, you should be okay. I download at 1.2 MB/s, but upload rates are usually way lower than your download rate so I probably would be incapable of hosting a server for multiple people.

well I said a few times my internet was 6mb upload speed....so I guess my internet is fine

the CPU is an i7@2.9ghz and 6gb ram, so someone said 4ghz and 8gb ram so I guess I'll just have to wait for the requirements to be officially released from bethesda before bothering. thanks for the help

you'll be fine as i said with a few players.. the i7 is a powerful cpu, i have a i7 960 at 4Ghz w/8GB ram and its more powerful than some xeon servers..

your internet speeds are fine for hosting..obviously if you plan on doing this long term rent a fully dedicated server.

Better off creating a private match - if there are provided dedicated servers, use those, if not, just use P2P - the game's going to have a solid enough system in place, so it should still be fine - host migration = person with best average ping to other players becomes host.

oh I wasn't aware there was a p2p option as well for private matches, nice lol
