Hoover Dam CTD : Fallout: New Vegas

I've played 30 hours + so far, done loads of quests, been to most places south of the Strip, and the game has not crashed or glitched once.

However, I can't cross Hoover Dam. Halfway across it CTDs. Every time. I've gone away, resaved, come back, but it crashes in the same spot every time. It's midway between the first two Dam towers (coming from the southwest). Incredibly frustrating.

Does it crash for anyone else?

bump! and gah!

I have now played 100+ hours, been to every location on the map, in caves, underwater, up mountaintops, the works.

But the simple act of walking on Hoover Dam STILL crashes the game! How can I finish if I can't even get onto the dam!

And I've found other crashpoints too.

1) in the middle of Hoover dam. CTD everytime
2) if I go into the visitor center, up the power-station into the tower, and out, it CTDs too

Not sure whether it's a navmesh problem, cells not unloading, whatever, but something is wrong with hoover dam, and it's going to be a showstopper.

I am sorry that I do not have a solution for you, but I have come to express a similar problem. About 12 hours into the game I finally reached Freeside. I decided to back to my room in Novac to get some of my stuff, but every time I come near El Dorado Gas & Service the game crashes abruptly. This is with the patches and no mods.

hmm.. sounds like a "moving into a new cell and being overloaded" issue to me, but I know nothing about such things, just what peeps say.

I originally thought the Hoover Dam crash was because of the huge amount of water being rendered : until I went off and did something for the Boomers in an even BIGGER amount of water, with no issues, so its not that.

I thought I would try to explore Hoover Dam in the GECK, see if there was something there that could be causing the crash. So I loaded up Hoover Dam Center in the GECK and... the GECK crashed too! I would laugh if I wasn't so depressed. 100 hours of my life down the drain...

So its come to crunch time. Me and Lily on the Dam, legionairs flying left and right, chaos and mayhem. I even thought it might just work, but... nope, got to the same spot, mid towers, and CTD. Again.

Obsidian/Bethesda, I cannot finish your game because I cannot cross the dam because it crashes to desktop everytime

Has no-one else got this far yet, or has no-one else had this crash on them?

Could someone... anyone... with a PC version, go to hoover dam and just try walking across it. Does anything strange/unusual/scripted happen at the midpoint between the two towers?

whatever that red rectangle is doing, it is a Rubicon I cannot cross on pain of crash-to-desktop.

edit:

the red rectangle runs VHDLegionWestDamZone03EnableScript

which, as far as I can tell, triggers NCR troops in the next cell only if you are aligned with the Legion. Which I am not, so it shouldn't do anything. Certainly shouldn't cause a CTD

AHA - solved! Kinda!

I was looking at that Geck screenshot posted in my last post, and it occured to me that if it wasn't the Legionary trigger that was causing the CTD (and no reason it would be really) then what else is going on? Well, there is the blue circle, which is an "audio area" or somesuch. Aha, thinks me to myself, maybe it's coming out of that audio area that is causing the crash. So how to test it? Turn the background music off, obviously. How to do that? Well, turn the radio on!

So I fire up both an early save near the dam, and a final battle save near the dam, test them - with "ambient" background music, I get a CTD at the point where the one audio backdrop changes to another. Tried both of them WITH THE RADIO ON, and no CTD!!! Works perfectly!

So, just play Hoover Dam with the radio on. However, something is cooky about the audio zones on hoover dam, so the devs might just want to check that.
