Skyrim and Beyond 2012..Other RPGs after Skyrim?

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 4:56 pm

Greetings,

The nature of this topic is to ponder the future of gaming post-Skyrim. Seeing how Oblivion influenced so many titles in the open world genre, some for the better, others for the worse, it will be exciting to envision what the future of RPGs might look like after Skyrim touches down. Maybe the commercial viability of a true open world game will be seen, giving us gamers who live for this stuff the opportunity to have these types of games handled by developers who would have only dreamed of doing such projects. I have seen some amazing previews of titles to be released post 2012, and I know deep down that Skyrim is an influence in all of them.

So, heres to Skyrim, and the future!

Um.. Skyrim will probably be a great game but that does not mean it's a trend setter anymore or any less than other games, I don't see any RPGs that are copying off each other. Divinity, Gothic3/4 mass effec fable series etc etc all of there own distinct play and feel.... So

Will it effect future TES titles? Hell yes.

The Elder Scrolls series as a whole has a big impact on the open-world RPG genre. As i've said before though, I really wish developers would look at Daggerfall above all other Elder Scrolls games for a source of inspiration. It's map was large enough to be a real-world country, which is exactly how RPGs should be in my opinion. Morrowind... Oblivion... Skyrim... they're all ridiculously tiny in comparison. Sure, they're a lot more detailed, but there has to be a point in the future where technology can handle both an enormous world and great detail.

That could be a decade away though. In the nearer future, i'm looking forward to seeing if SureAI attempt a TC mod for Skyrim. They surpassed Oblivion in pretty much every way possible with Nehrim. Wouldn't be surprised to see them do it again with Skyrim.

Two Worlds, Two Worlds 2, Bards Tale, Mount and Blade, Divinity: Ego Draconis Series and many others. Now, mind that I said influenced, not copied. I believe I should state that the theme of the post is the survivability of open world games, and TES contribution to that, in general. Of course, also looking to the future of games, like Dragon's Dogma (Original IP by Capcom, of all developers!), Kingdom of Amalur: Reckoning, and a few others soon to come. All of these have some influence of previous Elder Scrolls titles, as well as the upcoming Skyrim. Also, I would hope some of these games will have influence on future TES titles in the same fashion.

Two Worlds, maybe, as the devs clearly thought that randomising most stuff and then clicking the save button is grand. :shifty:
Bard's Tale? Mount and Blade? Divinity? Only one of those is open world (and influenced by Daggerfall, since the devs stated they didn't like the direction after Morrowind and that one's limited world), one came out before Oblivion, and the other has nothing to do with Oblivion at all.
TES is a very special series you can rarely copy from. The only thing that is upcoming and directly "influenced" by Oblivion would be Kingdom of Amalur, but that's like saying The Old Man and the Sea is influenced by The Sun Also Rises.

Not to sound like a broken record, but I didn't think Oblivion was all that great, and I'm refusing to get exited about Skyrim until it turns out to be good. I've been a huge TES fan since Arena in 1994, and I won't be hurt again. :P

That said, I'm not sure I buy the fact that Oblivion was a big influence on other RPGs. The format isn't that much different than what BGS has been doing since the aforementioned Arena in 1994, and while that game was ahead of its time in a lot of ways, the individual component concepts weren't groundbreaking even then. Oblivion's sales figures certainly influenced other publishers to dump monies into open-world RPG products, but Oblivion itself was far from bringing much of anything new to the table outside of fancy graphics.

You mean like Morrowind and Oblivion already did?

I don't see what's so ground-breaking, from what I've read so far it just seems like Oblivion 2.0.

I'm wondering what Bethesda will do with that new engine for the Fallout series.

It is my dear belief that Skyrim shall be the ultimate level of perfection for RPGs. All other developers will tremble at the thought of their creations being compared to Skyrim and so the genre of Role-playing Games will end forever.
