I purchased new vegas a couple of weeks ago & just got around to opening it last nite. As soon as i put it into my 360 pro it killed the disk drive. It wont play any disks anymore, cant even hear the drive try to spin the disk. So i thought wellmaybe it was just time for it to die.. w/e. Went to target & bought a brand new 360 with the big 250gig hd that i needed anyway. My 40 gig was about filled. Opened the new 360 & played culdcept saga justvfine in the disk tray, then as soon as i put new vegas into the drive.. it played for about 15 mins. Shut it down to eat.. came back, bam! Disk drive dead.. wont recognise or play any disks anymore..doesnt even try to load them... just says "open tray" This is a 4hr old shiny black doorstop now & new vegas killed it. There is a bad batch of games & bethesda needs to address these issues.

How do you know there is a bad batch?

Have you tried more than one disc?

Anyway I've got more than 130 hours out of new vegas now and my disc drive still works fine.

I think you've got good grounds for returning both F:NV and your new 360!

I don't know how a disc could damage the drive, but surely you can return your console to wherever you bought it and tell them it doesn't work out of the box.
Let them try to get it to play!

Yes, it's very perplexing. It doesn't seem logical, that's why I just went & purchased a new console when it happened to the 1st 360. I do plan to return the 2nd 360 to Target today. Not too happy about my 1st 360's drive being wiped out though, I'm planning on calling Bethesda Monday to at least see if they realize that this is an issue.

My GF Console has from time to time the message -please insert disk- even if u put one inside.
Last week my Own disk drive died...all disks unreadable. (You could get it working by open and closing
the tray 50 times, but .........i returned it. :foodndrink:

I would take them both back and get a refund. Happening more than once sounds like it is more than a coincidence. I hear more and more the craziest things happening while playing this game. I was playing it before Thanksgiving and my XBox had the Red Ring of Death happen to it. That was probably a coincidence but still.

My first 360 had the RROD when I switched it on one night. After disconnecting the power and waiting a few minutes, it was okay. It finally went belly a few weeks later, whilst playing Mass Effect 2 from the HDD (which was okay, as I'm now using it in the 360 Arcade I bought as a replacement).

I haven't come across this error with New Vegas, but I did have this same thing happen to me with my copy of Fallout 3: Game of the Year edition. I came across a very strange, but effective fix.

Pad a section of your floor with something soft, like a folded blanket. Hold your Xbox a little ways above the floor. Drop it. Repeat if necessary.

No, seriously. If I've understand what I read when I heard about the fix (I'm definitely no expert) the laser reading the discs sometimes gets stuck and the small drop jolts it back into place. However, I've found that this doesn't work as a permanent fix. Every time I put Fallout 3 in I end up with the same error after I switch the disc out, and then I have to repeat the dropping process. It does save me from having to open my Xbox up (voiding the warranty) or send it back in (which takes forever) though.

If you do try this, be incredibly careful - obviously there's a risk of breaking your Xbox even further.

I feel for you, though I didn't lose a disk drive, I lost 6-7 years of game saves, DLC, patches, my gamer-tag, and everything else on my hard drive when New Vegas obliterated it.

Upon getting New Vegas I happily installed it on my new 80 gb hard drive. My naive thinking was this "oh boy, i'm going to be playing this game so much, why not install it on my hard drive to reduce loading times and wear and tear on my disk drive." So I installed it. About 20 hours into my adventure, I had noticed some glitches and whatnot, but I thought "oh well, I can deal, I love Fallout." One fateful day I enter the Silver Rush. I talk to those inside and go to walk out. Up pops the loading screen, then it froze and crashed. I thought "no big deal, i'll restart my Xbox and load a prior save, lose a little time, but no biggy." I restart the Xbox and fire up New Vegas. I go to load a save, but its corrupted. All 30-40 of my save files are CORRUPTED. A little panic, but no big deal, I can fix this. I restart my Xbox again, and now my hard drive is no longer recognized. Long story short, my hard drive was corrupted and I had to re-format it. Years of game saves lost (the most important being my Mass Effect 1-2, Dragon Age, and Borderlands saves) all my DLC, everything. Xbox/Microsoft support basically told me to go fornicate myself.

So in the end, I reformatted, recovered my gamer-tag, re-downloaded my DLC, and will NEVER install another Bethesda/Obsidian/Fallout game to my hard drive ever again. Thanks developers, you guys know how to stick it to us.

Dude, I've been around technology awhile and your specific problem is a special case. Don't get me wrong it's very easy to point the finger at any game or a console. However you might want to make sure you're not getting any power fluctuations where you plug your xbox 360 into the power outlets or surge protectors. More often than not if you have shady power flow current it will force certain electronics to fail or become damaged. I would check the power brick that comes with an xbox 360 to make sure that is not causing any problems as well. Make sure you have xbox 360 power brick sitting on a hard surface not a carpet whatsoever.

100% certainty do not think it's Fallout: NV disc fault that your having this issue. Each disc for every single game on xbox 360 must be thoroughly tested before being brought to market. Disc drives do fail but not at the rate as I see in this topic. Disc drive tray alignment could be off but suffice to say this does happen, but not in the frequency that is being described.

Sure protectors don't always protect you if they start going faulty and you don't know then you can suffer accidental electronic failures without notice.

I have an Xbox 360 250Gb COD:MW2 Elite and I treat it like a baby so it won't go RROD on me so quickly. I install games to the HD and never run the games off the disc ever so I can cut down heat issues. I have never had a problem with Fallout:NV except for the bugs in the game by itself.

I think your on to something after I get my Fallout disc resurfaced I'll try plugging my surge protector into a different outlet. since I've had the game we had the fuse for all of my room and half of the next room blow (late last year) and we lost power due to weather yesterday and due to something else late last year.

360s are so touchy anyway, what with the damn RROD i [censored] myself every time New Vegas freezes on me expecting my xbox to not turn back on.

THIS IS NOT A SPECIAL CASE! i have never had issues with my disk drive until i started NV and since then, it has gradually (then rapidly after patches) become more of a problem. this game ABSOLUTELY causes problems in the disk drive. i bought a second copy thinking it was only a scratch problem but the second disc repeatedly froze in the exact same manner as the first. now since the patches, i've completely wiped my hdd and console and still find it to be rendered completely useless. the game freezes upon first load.. EVERY TIME. the part i don't understand is why this happens to some consoles but causes no problems on others. i've used the same disc in another xbox many times without a single freeze or crash but literally cannot play this game on my own device. this is definitely a real and unbelievably frustrating issue regardless of how long anybody has been around technology dude

please fix !!!

Have you contacted Microsoft about this? Like you, I find it baffling that some consoles are affected, whilst others aren't.
