After my debacle with Fallout 3 (purchasing it, and never actually having the game ever work), against my better judgment I decided to give Fallout New Vegas a try.

I bought the game through Steam, installed it, and it immediately crashed to the desktop without even starting the game. I cannot play the game by directly accessing the Fallout.exe file, and a file verification run tells me that FNV has one file that failed to validate and that Steam, needs to reacquire it (which it doesn't)

Are you sure about that?

I notice you have ffdshow listed in the codecs section. It is known to cause issues with the Gamebryo engine for some. Add the FalloutNV.exe to ffdshow's exception list. See if it helps.

Your symptoms are the same as to what a codec issue can do. Removing all codecs packs would be well worth a trying if you ask me.

Just did it, and no soap. I also disabled all the Codecs and had no luck. I also have the Klite pack installed form my futile attempts to deal with this problem on Fallout 3 and no luck.

Obsidian did not do nearly enough testing for PC platform, but then again, it IS very hard to test on the PC because of so many variables. The game runs okay for me, except that I have to use a mod to prevent extreme lag when in the presence of numerous NPC's. I suggest trying to contact Steam as to why you cannot revalidate your setup, and/or uninstall it and allow Steam to re-download it. Whatever file that is missing, that may be your culprit.

I'm doing the redownload of the whole thing now.

Thanks for everyones help so far. I'm not a huge gamer (I normally only run into a couple of games a year that I really want to play) and it's really discouraging to run into the same problem twice with games (Fallout 3 and New Vegas) from the same company and not be able to play either of them

you also might try setting all your NV .exe to run in
win xp compatibility mode and see if that works...

I just did this and had no luck.

I also redownlaoded the entire thing from Steam and had no luck. I reverified and came up with a file missing again and it would be reacquired. I've verified the game files five times and still ahve a file missing. NV does download something from Steam, but it continues to report that something is missing.
