Cultural Diversity

Call me a bigot, but before you do, at least read this post.

Diversity is garbage. There, I said it. Are you happy now? Of course you're not, all I've done is spark some controversy for the sake of controversy. Or at least I'm sure that's the thought that immediately pops to mind whenever some misguided, snot nosed punk says "Diversity is garbage" in an attempt to raise himself above the brainwashed proletariat onto the pedestal of "higher thinking individuals." What is diversity anyway? Who the hell cares what diversity is? To paraphrase a memorable quote, "Diversity could be the state of my closet. I have a diverse array of ties from which to choose. My shoes are diverse in color." While this is an interesting comparison, it is irrelevant in the grand scheme of things, because it is merely an exploitation of the word's meaning according to Mr. Merriam and Mr. Webster.

It is a fact that we have come to associate the word diversity with culture.

I say diversity is garbage for a reason, but it must be placed in context for the reason to be valid. Cultural diversity is forced upon us from every direction, whether it is through MTV, textbooks (which must contain an equal number of people from all races, ages, and genders in regards to both pictures and written text in order to be published), Old Navy, television commercials, billboards, and even art. Depictions of individuals from all races and ethnicities working together in a carefree environment have become commonplace, and while this is not a bad thing by any means, it is unrealistic. This sort of depiction gives the impression that Executive Order 9066 and the murder of Emmit Louis Till are irrelevant in today's society, when in reality, racial tension still exists in today's world. Of course there are places and situations where this kind of integrated environment is possible, but more common is the situation that occurs when a black child's family moves to an all white neighborhood and his hand bares a stark difference to the other childrens' when raised to give an answer; when a white person walks into a restaurant and receives suspicious stares because he is the only present with such a skin tone. In my opinion, this is the way the world should opperate until any given individual learns to work past it.

The meaning of cultural diversity cannot be successfully learned from a book, promoted by schools, the media, or even government institutions devoted to making sure that what we see and hear every day is socially acceptable. To understand the importance of heritage, one must be descriminated against, looked down upon, and ideally, laughed at for a condition that is totally out of their control. You must feel uncomfortable in your own shoes, so that you comprehend exactly why you should respect the story of each individual on this planet, regardless of salary, color, age, or six. But who am I?how am I, with only seventeen years under my belt, to make such a bold statement?

Good question.

In the end, I suppose that what's actually garbage is the sugar coated version of diversity we are taught to believe actually exists.

You've had your say, but that is all these forums will countenance. I don't want to have to moderate responses to this kind of flamebait. Closed as political.
