The Strip. Empty?

Post » Fri May 13, 2011 11:49 am

Is it just me or does the strip and many of the casinos shown look pretty empty? I expected there to be a lot of hustle and bustle going on but so far all I've seen is a handful of people in each casino and out on the strip. What gives? Is this just because these were early snippets of the game that they hadn't put all the characters in or what?

It's because the engine can't handle too many people at once. :(

In some of the latest video I've seen a good number of NPCs walking around. A lot of the earlier video was from an unfinished version of the game.

It won't be a lot, though since there's engine limitations.

Have you seen Dev Diary #5 where they discuss the Strip and how they filled it wit as many NPCs as they could?

I actually just watched that and those videos were seriously lacking people as well.

The strip is also an exclusive place- remember you have to pass a credit check to get in. (I assume the NCR has some sort of arrangement with Mr. House allowing NCR troops to have leave there).

So you can expect that it wouldn't be that populated, when it's walled off and protected by a robot army.
Only the elites will go there.
I expect the sprawling outskirts of New Vegas will be more populated than the strip itself.

It's like tempenny tower, I like how they covered the engines' weaknesses with a cool storyline aspect that really works.
Wow Obsidian, wow.

Lmao.

"we wanted to make it you know, giant casinos, and giant neon signs, and tons of people milling about...", while they show a scene of a casino with like 4 people standing around in it.

Blame it on Gamebyro.

Pretty much. Putting too many actors in the scene at once brings low-end PCs and consoles to their knees in Bethesda's Gamebryo games. Try running Mart's Mutant Mod and cranking up the spawn rate on a low-end PC and it's barely playable in large battles.

I don't really care how many people are there. it should be like being in a exclusive club inside the Strip. With even more exclusive clubs inside. So I don't know why anyone would think there tons of people there in the first place.

Just my opinion

Most people in the wasteland are poor to begin with so they would have a hard time getting past the securitrons, let alone gambling what lil money they do have afterwards. It's just generally not a good idea for the average wastelander so the "it's for the elite" excuse works out pretty well.

The # of people they have wondering around the strip will have to do, exclusive place in the middle of a desert wasteland = limited amount of people.

Hell I don't care either. I just thought that it was a funny clip to show for what was being said. I'm perfectly fine with the number of people that were inside the mill in The Pitt, and I'm sure they've been able to include at least that many.

This has always been something you just have to use a "suspension of disbelief" when it comes to a multitude of RPGs - not just Fallout. Since Fallout 1 through Fallout 3, if you seriously ever took a census of how many NPCs were in each city, you'd discover that even the ones that were touted as large cities or towns (like Vault City) really only had about 50 people you could count on the screen. Fallout 3's excuse is the Gamebryo engine, but I seriously have trouble thinking of ANY RPG to date where a populated city actually contained an amount of NPCs comparable to a real life city. City of Heroes/Villains and Champions Online are the only examples that spring to mind off the top of my head - in those games there were certain areas in the city you could watch a variety of pedestrians mill about.

The whole money situation among the common people is a good excuse. Also there isn't that many people left. I mean everyone got nuked. I know Vegas didn't for some reason but with the new harsh wasteland environment many people would have died out in 200 years. So in shorter words there's not very many people left let alone people with enough money to gamble.
