Possible Explanation for the crow's

Post » Tue May 17, 2011 6:01 am

Now i dont know if anyone else has thought about this at all, but what is the significance behind the crows in the game? Ambience? Certainly. To screw with your mind making you think there's a friendly target ahead? Why not. But now ive come up with my own reasoning, which i dont know if its been stated yet and some may say Im going out on a limb here.

First off the crows are actually ravens as I'm sure some of you are aware, now ive seen these ravens everywhere, but the highest concentration of them that I have seen was about 10 of them around Boulder City and then 7 by Nipton, if you have been to these locations in game you will have noticed that many lives have been lost at these areas. Also as some of you know ravens are commonly used in literature as symbols of death, mourning, and general dismay. So my explanation for the ravens is that they mark the areas where wandering souls still walk, after being released from their body, or in laymans terms, mark where lotsa people died. So what do you think?

Yes I agree with you, in many mythologies birds, especially crows and ravens, are thought to escort the souls of the dead to the afterlife (and being scavengers they will congregate around corpses left out). But they also add flavour to the game. In FO3 you could see birds circling in the sky above certain locations but they never landed - Paradise Falls was one iirc and the Alien Crash Site also had birds in the sky above it. Btw just to be pedantic (sorry I can't help myself), "crows" is plural, not a possessive, so you don't need an apostrophe.

I thought there was an achievement or something related to them, so I've been killing them.

They kinda count toward Lord Death (since they count as an "everything") but nothing really special about them. They will eat dead bodies and are worth up to 3xp (depending on whether or not you have all 3 ranks of Swift Learner).

Considering that bad things often seem to happen as soon as I approach them (ambush or the like), I consider them a sort of bad omen... <_<.

Your theory sounds pretty good and it would answer what I noticed about them as well. A few times I have followed a friendly target marker and found one next to a relatively fresh corpse, all human. There was no others around and no baddies.

Maybe one of the random things I will add to my random encounter mod is a crow that cries out "Nevermore!"

I've never noticed the Ravens being near corpses. I have however noticed them near things I'm about to turn into corpses. Like Radscorpions, Powder Gangers, Feral Ghouls.....Ravens. Yeah, I kill them too cause I like the explodyness and feathers when you kill them.

Although, after reading this thread I'm going to kind of pay more attention to them and what is around them before dropping a 9mm round into them.
