New vegas steam question

Post » Sun May 15, 2011 5:31 am

Ive read on many websites articles about new vegas where the article quotes someone who say that there will be steam acheivements for new vegas on steam, if you go on steam now the only features of the game are, single-player, Steam Leaderboards, Steam Cloud and Controller enabled. NO STEAM ACHEIVEMENTS?? any idea why this is?

also my other question is...

look at this link

http://www.tweakguides.com/Fallout3_3.html

scroll down to where it says "note" in bold letters, i had this problem in fallout 3, the juddering problem, even though my hardware exceeds to recommended requirements by far, will i still have this problem in the new one?

any advice is appreciated, thanks :)

Let me guess, did you have over 2 cores in your PC?

I don't know about the Steam Achievements, but I had "juddering" or stuttering in FO3 with my high-end rig and tried everything in the Tweak Guide to no avail - then, on a lark (I can't remember why I was doing this), I turned down the Object-Item Distance in the settings in the game from 75-Max to just under 50. All my micro-stuttering problems went away. I guess the engine just kept hiccuping on loading tons of new litter and tin cans in the distance every time I glanced in a direction. Don't know if it the same problem for you, but keeping everything else at max and turning that setting down to half or less solved my problem.

EDIT:

Hmm, I forgot about the engine not handling multi-cores well. I have a quad-core, but never felt comfortable screwing around with the "fixes" suggested for FO3, as after the change I noted above, the game ran like butter for me. Maybe it should have run like greased lightning, but I'll take butter over messing with CPU settings. I believe I heard they fixed the multi-core issue in New Vegas. Anyone have any news on this?

I haven't heard that, but I would be extremely disappointed if they didn't fix that issue.

Get more RAM, 3GB is poor for that card as it will use at least a gig of it straight away and only leave 2 for everything else.

Oh, that's easy. Buy it on the PC. Most of the bugs will be fixed by an unofficial patch if Obsidian doesn't fix them themselves with official patches anyway.

The 360 has almost nothing to recommend it if you have a PC capable of running NV.

What? That card has its own onboard memory. The game will undoubtedly use more system memory, but 3 gigs isn't too bad. If you don't have a 64 bit OS, it's only one gig short of the max you can use anyway.

More ram is next on the list.

I think ill probs just risk it and get it on pc

You say to buy it on pc, BUT, ive read people say that they had this problem with games going back all the way to oblivion, and they didnt fix it for fallout 3, so i cant see them sorting it for new vegas, damn gamebryo engine,

Graphic cards are allocated system RAM to match their own memory, so I assume yours is 1gig version so subtract that from your RAM. It is how PCs work. ;)
Basically your low RAM is your systems weak point, that I know of anyway as I don't know the rest of the specs. Especially for a streaming resources game such as Fallout 3 and NV.

Hi guys,

Two things:

Yes we have achievements on Steam. I'll ping Valve to update that page. Sorry for the confusion. :)

Also, we have worked (directly with hardware manufacturers) to improve performance on multicore systems.

Hope that clears things up.

As a quad-core user, you have my gratitude. Thank you.

Now if you could just convince the programmers to make the engine use all of my 14 gigs of RAM to you know, load the whole game into memory at once, that would be awesome. :whistling: (Joking. Maybe games will do that in a few years, eh?) Thanks again, though. Glad to see previous issues have been addressed.

You can do it now already using a RAMdisk application. I am envious with my paltry 8gigs, I have to be selective of game files to load into RAM and wish I could just dump a whole game into RAM like you can.

Good to hear about the Quad core CPU's getting a little love, thanks Beth.

Hey guys,

One more update after talking to Valve:

The reason we don't list achievements yet is because on valve's site, putting that up puts a link to all the achievements and global stat tracking. Since we're not live, we can't do that yet, so no pre-order game has achievements listed on the sidebar.

They're looking to fix that in the future, but as of right now, they can't do it.

Just thought you'd like to know the reason for that. :)

Thanks again. Nice to know. You all seem much more active on the forums lately, almost as if you no longer have some all time-consuming task taking all of your attention . . . . :tops:

Steam achievements are already up. If you can't see them, exit and restart Steam.
