I was really looking forward to playing this game (loved FO3!) but the constant crashing is driving me nuts! I am trying to remember to hit F5 every couple of minutes, but that's a pain, and if you get too involved, you forget to save and then... Well, I'm sure you all know the feeling of advancing in the game and then all your work crashes to the desktop for no obvious reason! I've updated all drivers (I think) and lower the video quality to High. Although I don't see that I should have to, my computer should be more than enough to run the game. I am not terribly computer savvy, so I need some help as to what to try to get this game to run for more than ten minutes or so.
What I've tried or done:
Ran Windows Update (no updates available)
Updated video driver
Updated audio driver
Closed all other running programs
Lowered quality from Super (?) to High

I haven't uninstalled and reinstalled. It took SO long (hours and hours!) that I would like to leave that as a very last resort. A couple of odd things I've noticed: when starting the game, before any screens come up, my wallpaper jiggles as if it's being shaken from side to side. The loading screens are normal; and when it does crash, I get the usual "This program has a problem and has stopped working" blab from Microsoft, but the mouse pointer is gone. If I hit it doesn't close the dialogue box. I can't do anything with the desktop at all. I have to ctrl-alt-del out, and start Task Manager to stop the program.

Just downloaded and installed the very latest video drivers from ATI (the Catalyst suite). Started up game. Crash in just a few seconds!! It's worse than before. I can usually get a few minutes out of it. *sigh* Anyone?

Hmm looks like you're free of most of the usual suspects. The only two things I can think of to try (longshots) are:

Download ATI d3d9.dll (should not need it after latest patch but if it works it works, if it doesn't then delete it):

Force game to use only two cores for threadedai (this was a fix for fallout 3 that shouldn't be needed anymore but is worth trying):

*you may have to change one or more of these files from read only - to do that right click on it, select properties and uncheck read only, hit ok*

1) Open fallout.ini file in My Documents\My Games\FalloutNV with a text editor such as Notepad.
2) Creat a copy of the original just in case we mess things up
3) Look for the string bUseThreadedAI=0
4) Change it to bUseThreadedAI=1
5) Add another line beneath that one, iNumHWThreads=2
6) Save and close this file.
7( Repeat steps 2-5 for fallout_default.ini file in installation dir (default C:\Program Files (x86)\Bethesda Softworks\Fallout New Vegas)

Those are both longshots but they have been known to help some people. Hopefully when people wake up in the morning they'll have some more solid advice.

FWIW, I had the same issue and turning off any background audio programs solved my problem:

Background Audio isn't an issue for me. But I read elsewhere on this forum to "Verify Integrity of Game Cache" within the Steam app. It ALWAYS says Fallout is missing one component and is "aquiring required component". This leads me to think an uninstall and reinstall might be necessary. But I really didn't want to have to do that! It took SOOO long to install it the first time, it was ridiculous. But I'll try it and see. *sigh*

According to Steam the failure to verify one file needing it to be reaquired is a known issue and is not a problem with the running of the game. (I was suffering from continual crashes and reported this to Steam and the info about the file verification was part of their reply.)

The problem of my continual game crashes was solved by the way. Read my reply to PaulMW1234 in his earlier post a few lines down from this one as to what I did.
