you need more RAM, you should have at least 2gb of RAM to play this game, just to make sure though, do crashes occur more inside, outside, or equally

well then it may not just be the RAM, what OS are you using, it may also be the card. If it is occuring more outside than inside then it will either be a RAM or a graphics card issue. some versions of windows have trouble playing the game, try compatibility mode

Both pretty equally.

Your video card, motherboard and sound card drivers all need updating. I also notice ffdshow in codecs. Try disabling the codec or uninstalling it.
The codec has been known to cause issues.

wow I completely forgot about the drivers, I still think you need more RAM though, otherwise you will get the same amount of crashing

You definitely need more ram but that's not the sole reason your game is crashing! It's because the game is so [censored] up and has been since release that they need to release the 'COMPREHENSIVE' whose your daddy patch so it fixes EVERYTHING otherwise I'd just quit and play it when it gets fixed because right now it's a joke.

Latest news on the whose your daddy patch is below,

We're putting the final touches on the patch. It shouldn't be too much longer. On the day it becomes available, we'll let folks know.

I started playing the same day it was released and have logged well over 200 hours since then. From Day One right up to the present, I rarely can go more than 10 minutes outside before I get a Crash To desktop. It's gotten to the point I have to Save every 5 minutes or risk losing a substantial amount of gameplay _repeatedly_. [The amount of lost gameplay because of CTDs is probably @ 30 hours or so, cumulative total.] I doubt that it's my hardware; **possibly** because I'm still using XP (SP3) and Micro$soft may have kicked them a substantial bribe to make the XP version to deliberately be buggy, in order to motivate players to upgrade to Windows 7.

Intel Core 2 Quad CPU Q8200 @2.33 GHz (4 CPUs)
4 Gb RAM
DirectX 9.0c
NVidia GeForce GTX 460 w/ 1024 Mb of graphic RAM
NVidia video driver 258.96

Really, FNV has a LOT of enjoyable gameplay (which accounts for the 200+ hours of play) -- EXCEPT for the incredibly frequent CTDs. The last time I ran into a decent game this plagued with crashes was Darklands -- which, f you're as ancient I am, would recall that it was one of the primary progenitors of this kind of RPG. (That is, extensive Skill growth as the character advances in levels.)

Installed driver 260.99 and the game actually stayed stable for just over two hours. Not perfect, but MASSIVELY better than a CTD every 5-10 minutes. But after starting again, it crashed after @45 minutes. Then after only 5. Then again after another 45 minute stint. All of these sessions were my character trudging all over the countryside. (I was conducting an extensive Mantis hunt _after_ I had already eradicated the two primary Mantis breeding grounds. That's what I get for being too thorough.)

Don't know if this is the key factor, but it seems that terrain with LOTS of clutter and variation stays more stable than vast stretches 0f same old/same old. Like if I talk a walk along the length of the Nellis airstrips, I can expect a CTD within a minute or two. In contrast, rockhopping all over the mountains doesn't crash nearly as often. This makes me conjecture that the CTDs have something to do with the "distance to the horizon" and how fast the graphics engine can add more detail. On long flat stretches, you can run so fast that the engine can't keep up = CTD. OTOH, in rough terrain, you movement speed is curtailed, giving the engine the time it needs to fill in the blanks. However, I'm still getting these crashes after I lowered graphic detail to 50%, including the distance to horizon (Fade) setting. [During the install, the program's auto-detect described my rig as being able to handle "Ultra High" detail.]

I'll try the windowed format and see if that improves anything.

It's probably not the problem at all, but it might be worth checking- there's always a chance of GPU overheat. If your stability before crashing with the latest drivers is considerably longer than stability after the first crash this MAY be indicative of a heat issue. As the card is now already pretty warm, if heat is the issue, subsequent attempts to play will result in reaching that critical temperature much more quickly than the first attempt did.

To rule this out you can check your GPU temps with a utility like rivatuner or GPU-Z. They can also run some basic diagnostics tests. Though I have to say I think it is unlikely that this is the cause- the fact that you experienced relatively rapid crashing after the first more stable session made me think of overheating.

And yeah let us know about windowed mode. The fact that running in windowed mode is fixing the game for so many people suggests something wrong about how the game is behaving in full screen across a wide variety of hardware. This would also suggest that it is something that would be more easily fixed in a patch than Gamebryo tantrums over very specific hardware combinations.

Similar to CaptainPatch I was experiencing constant crashes every 5-10 minutes. I spent more time starting the game than playing it.

I tried all the fixes posted in the Forum without success until I tried the Directshow_filter_reset downloadable from Nexus (link available in earlier posts on this Forum.) I was reluctant to use this because of the possibility of screwing up other programmes and also because it seems to be a Windows XP programme. Anyway I decided to go for broke and surprisingly it worked. I have spent the weekend (I work in the Middle East where the weekend is Friday and Saturday) and played the game for over 10 hours without any sign of a crash. My computer is a Sony Vaio FW series with 2.8GHz core duo processor and ATI Mobility HD4650 graphics card. This is a nothing special set up but I can run in Ultra without any problem.

If you haven't tried restting the codecs, try it. It may work

Switching to windowed mode _did_ alleviate the CTDs considerably. HOWEVER, since switching I have been experiencing erratic screen freezes with the "FNV has experienced a problem and needs to shut down" panel pop-up. [All of these likewise occurring when I was traveling outside.] I say "erratic" because it may be that I've been playing > 2 hours, or it may be just 5 minutes. On average, crashes are occurring between 1 and 2 hours of gameplay. Not perfect, but vastly preferable to a CTD every 10 minutes.

@charybdisjim -- I doubt very much that it is any kind of heat problem. Awhile back I was experiencing some total system crashes that turned out to be because case vent holes was choked with dust and dust bunnies. Cleaned those out and then went overboard improving the ventilation: 1 video card fan, 1 CPU cooler fan, _3_ case exhaust fans. Now the case doesn't even get warm to the touch.

And give Micro$oft the satisfaction of _making_ me buy their latest/greatest by making the older version work in a buggy fashion? Besides, if Bethesda stipulates that "This game can be played with the __________ Operating System", then it should work when using the _________ Operating System!
