Installing another game destroyed FONV

Post » Wed Mar 09, 2011 5:58 am

Hi there,

I'll add my directx information later today when I am on my home computer, but I wanted to bring up my problem to see if anyone has had the same issue and knows what is going on.

EDIT: See below, DirectX diag added.

I've been playing Fallout New Vegas for quite some time without too much trouble other than some crashes in VATS and the occasional CTD, but my performance has been really quite good. Last night, after playing for a little bit, I decided to install a new game (Risen) and see how that was. I installed it over Steam, and then loaded it up .. played for a minute or two and then decided I'd go back and play New Vegas again. Problem is, now when I load my game up in Fallout, whenever I turn my camera to the NE of the map (I was in Nellis AFB) it stutters so unbelievably bad that it's LESS than one frame per second. This happens when I turn my camera back towards New Vegas as well. I fast travelled to Hidden Valley just to see if it was only in that area and it wasn't. Further, a few bark scorpions attacked there and when Veronica was fighting them with her displacer glove, I got the same .5 frames per second.

I think it was pretty clear that Risen installed some form of Directx or C++ or something else that is older or that is not playing nice with FONV, but for the life of me I cannot figure out how. I downloaded a Directx redistributable from June 2010 (it's the most recent I could find) as well as a 2010 package of C++ and reinstalled my Graphic Drivers. I uninstalled Risen too. Nothing works, it won't fix that unbelievably horrible hanging when I turn the camera. I booted up Mass Effect 2 just to see if it was a more universal problem and it's not, that game is smooth as silk.

What I haven't done is change any settings or uncheck any mods because I didn't have any problems with any of my game settings or mods before I installed Risen. I've been focusing on finding out what this game install changed rather than changing everything that's been working fine for me.

I'm running Windows 7 - 64bit, 4 gigs of ram, 3ghz dual processor, Nvidia 9800GTX graphics card.

Hi there,

I'll add my directx information later today when I am on my home computer, but I wanted to bring up my problem to see if anyone has had the same issue and knows what is going on.

Like I said, I'll paste up my DirectX info a little later when I'm home but I wanted to see if this has happened to anyone else and if anyone had some basic suggestions.

Thanks kindly for any feedback.

Those are the wrong run-times. You should be installing the 2008 package.

I'll update this thread with my directx info when I get home, but I'll also download and install a 64 bit 2008 C++ package and report back.

Thanks Jasper!

Updated with my Directxdiag.

Unfortunately, reinstalling C++ 2008 has no effect on the horrible hangs less than 1 fps when I face certain directions.

You could try rolling your system back to your fallout 3 new vegas installation or try to uninstall and reinstall fallout 3 new vegas.

Ok I've seen some people complaining (on forums about Risen) about seeing multiple instances of visual c++ 2008 in their add/remove programs list after running the risen install. When you say you reinstalled C++ did you just run the "repair" or "remove" from the installer you downloaded? From the complaints I've seen this does not remove all instances of visual c++ 2008 when there are multiple (nearly identical - same version number and title given but different sizes and sometimes 3 in a row listed) instances installed.

Some people there (gamespot forums too) had been saying that they had to uninstall from ad/remove programs each instance of c++ 2008 then reinstall from the downloaded redistribuitable before things were running correctly.

Not sure why or if this is really an issue unless maybe one of the versions of the Risen installer is forcing an install of an older visual c++ package despite a newer version already being installed. Anyways go ahead and check to make sure there aren't multiple instances- uninstall them ALL- and then try doing an install from the downloaded 2008 c++ w/SP1.

Since I uninstalled everything that was installed on my computer yesterday, I don't know if it created duplicate instances or not. I remember specifically during the normal steam startup phase where it configures directx and and takes additional steps, that it installed C++ 2005 components.

Just now, I uninstalled ALL of my C++ runtimes, 2005, 2008, 2010 and reinstalled x64 versions of all of them. With the extreme choppiness, it's hard to tell if it's actually worse than before now or not, but it might be. I downloaded the June 2010 Directx web-installer, but it wont install anything as it says I am up to date.

I'm not sure where to go or what to do at this point. It's amazing that installing one game can just bork this and be such a difficult thing to pin down. I'm considering uninstalling FONV and reinstalling, but over steam all that happens is you have to re-download everything and it won't bother to re-configure the game before it starts the first time so I think it's wasted time.

I'm running Windows 7 64bit. Should I only be installing the 64bit packages of the C++ redistributable, or should I go with x86? I'm not sure of the difference.

Just to make it clear, Nellis Air Base is really a FPS killer. What I mean is, even I experience this sudden drop in performance and if I check my task manager, CPU is at 75% and its eating all my 1gb of gpu RAM. All I have to do is save, quit and relaunch the game, that fixes the fps problem.

I too can't figure out the other causes of the FPS drops specially when there are hordes encountered and just imagine it SPOILER ALERT during the Hoover dam fight.

If you want to fix your Visual C++ 2005/2008 runtime libraries, just download the corresponding SP1 versions and install them. Its not guaranteed to fix the poor performance though.

Thanks, I'll try to download the sp1 versions. Before I installed Risen, I was able to walk around Nellis without issue, now, nevermind Nellis ... I cannot even look around while standing in Goodsprings without the game hanging up reallly severely. Worse than slideshow.

Opps, now that's really bad. Can you check if by some accident your PC is defragging? Or could you check if your harddisk is lit almost all the time even if you are just standing up in game FONV.

Thank you for this. I deleted any 64 bit versions and left only the x86 versions (should I have both the x86 and 64? or only one or the other). It still doesn't work. Nothing was running in the background (like a disk defrag) either. I'm going to see if I can update my drivers again.

I have a mod that added DoF and disabled it. This made a huge difference in framerates, but the sound and movement still has a lot of micro stutters. The game also slows to slideshow during special effects anyway. So something that handles effects like DoF and blur and so forth has been messed up.

Having the 64-bit runtimes does not NORMALLY cause a problem - you should be able to have both. When I installed Visual C++ 2008 SP1 x64 - both x64 and x86 versions were added to my installed programs list under control panel. I'm not entirely sure the x64 redist. contains both libraries, although that might explain why it is about twice as large of a download as the x86 installer. So yes it does require the 32-bit runtimes but it does not require the absence of the x64 runtimes.

Anyways if it fixes your problem it fixes your problem, but you can have both on your system without any problem normally.

Great, thanks for that then, I'll just update with the 64 bits to have them as well.

I've narrowed my problem down to how effects are being handled. When one of those dust devils goes by - slideshow. When Veronica uses her displacer glove and it flashes blue - slideshow ... etc. Since there are numerous effects going on all the time somewhere, it hangs badly when I face in any one of several directions. Frustrating since before installing that Risen game, I had over 100 hours of beautiful performance.

Interestingly enough, I never needed or used that directx.dll that had been going around before the last patch, but I tried it anyway (because I'm kind of running out of things to reinstall and nothing seems to help) and it actually made a noticable difference ... it's still bad and stuttery, but it doesn't hang for several seconds per frame when I turn my camera. Note that when my game hangs/stutters severely or lightly, the sound stutters right along with it, which makes me think it's some sort of Directx issue. When I download the webinstaller for directx, it checks and states that I have a newer or equivilent version of directx and nothing will be installed. Maybe I should try downloading the redist pack and manually installing?

Thanks again for all the help and replies, I appreciate it.

I tested this on my system. Something you can try if you want (try it without the d3d.dll fix). Start a new game and go through character creation (although I skipped cration and went straight to the console). Then open the console and type
player.moveto 000ff26a <-That should bring you to the air force base. How are the framerates then?
I also typed player.setscale 100 and ran around king kong style

Heheh

Well, I tried a new game, still unfortunately, same problems. Turning down AA from 8 to 4, using the 'toggleemotions' console fix and using the dx 9 dll fix makes the game playable, but it microstutters horribly and constantly. Before I installed Risen, I never needed the dll, or the toggleemotions fix and I could run it on max (with water sampling down to low though). Very unfortunately, Call of Duty Black Ops is having the same graphics/sound stutter but without the fixes I'm using for FONV, so that's thoroughly unplayable.

I've downloaded and installed the latest June 2010 Direct x. Deleted and reinstalled all C++ versions and deleted and reinstalled my Nvidia graphics drivers all to no avail. I cannot regain the performance I had before I installed Risen. I have no idea what else this darn game could have changed, or if I'm going to have to roll back to an April 2010 computer backup (ouch) to fix it.

I downloaded the risen steam demo and noticed it does install an nvidia physx package. You might try to uninstall the physx you have and download the latest from nvidias website.
Also try a clean re-install of your graphic drivers. There is an option in the installation menu to do a clean install. it will uninstall your current drivers, prompt for a reboot, and install the new ones.
