Traders ran out of ammo and caps

Post » Wed Mar 09, 2011 6:18 am

I am level 24 or so, and I'm having big problem with ammunition now. I bought all that I could from the traders and they seem to do no restock anything. Same is it with caps, I found some pretty valuable things, but I can't sold them to anyone, because all merchants are out of caps.
The ammo problem is pretty bad now, because for example to killing a big scorpion I need so much ammo, that I simply can't afford to fight him:) I have noticed there are some benches where i can "craft" stuff, but I don't like things like this so I hoped I can avoid it. The falout wiki isn't clear about this, I read there that I can convert ammo, but can I made new one?

You can wait about 2 days and most traders' stocks reset with a new assortment of stuff and caps.

You can craft gun ammo by breaking down ammo you don't use into lead, powder, casings and appropriate primers, and using scrap metal to break down into lead. If you have the casings of the ammo you prefer you can combine the primers, powder, casings and lead into new ammunition.

I haven't experimented with energy weapons and such, but... through workbenches I believe you can do a conversion from one ammo type to another. I don't know what the requirements are though.

I hope this helps some,

To make your own ammo, you'll either need to breakdown some you don't use or buy the supplies (primer, cases, powder) and a vendor. The 'bot at Gun Runners usually has a good supply. Most vendors restock every few days.

Thanks guys!

About restocking, I am not counting days in game, but the traders have still things I sold to them at start of the game, and they are low on caps ever since. Only thing I really saw them restock are medical suplies. But I might be mistaking due the time I spent playing the game, so I will wait in game to see if they get some new goods:-)

About ammo, I'm using just guns, and I basicaly use all of them, and I'm low on any type of bullets now, so I will have to try to make new ones. Problem is that to collect all the stuff I need I have to get rid of most of my equpment, because I'm now fully loaded...

At level 24 you shouldn't be using much ammo to kill anything unless you are still depending on extremely weak weapons. What weapons are you using? I can't imagine running out of ammo in this game. There's so much of it everywhere.

How many guns are you carrying? If it's just one, or multiples that use the same ammo type, that's going to be a problem. Make use of at least two, and preferably 3-4 ammo sizes. You should never run out of ammo before getting back to a shop that can reload you unless you're relatively low level (ie. not yet in Vegas) and just killing every damn thing with a heartbeat.

If it's really that bad, get to Vegas and find the Gun Runners and Mick and Ralph's (both near Freeside's east gate- GR outside, M&R inside). They restock often and can set you up nicely. If you use energy weapons, go to the Silver Rush farther into Freeside.

I always do a circuits of Novac, 188, Gun Runner, Crimson Caravan and Mic&Raphls once in a while to stock up.

I just checked and I'm currently level 23:)
Well I must say I carry lots of weapons, but like I sad, I use all of them. I use hunting rifle for most, but also "maria", 10mm machine gun or cowboy repeater. But also good old vermin rifle, which I have with scope and silencer, and it's only weapon with lot of ammo. I have better weapons, like "all-american", assault carabine, sniper rifle or even minigun, but these are all in bad shape and I can't afford to have them repaired. But i just studied how to make a Weapon repair kit, so I hope I will repair some of them:-)
Thanks for your help

I get along just fine with two weapons that use the same ammo: a sniper rifle and This Machine and I breakdown all the .308 ammo I get to JSPs which means I lose out on about 30% of the ammo I get and I still have 350+ JSPs at any given time. I'm at level 22 and there's nothing out there that takes more than 3 shots to the head or one critical to the head. I'm getting the feeling that maybe he's only going FPS and missing a lot or his game is somehow bugged and vendors aren't restocking for some reason.

There's another way you could be wasting ammo: weapons in bad condition. Just pick a few weapons you like and keep them in perfect condition. You know you can repair weapons yourself correct? You don't need a weapon repair kit nor do you need to pay to get them repaired.

Well I just waited 48 before gun runners to see how is is about restocking... and the robot still have 72 caps and no ammo! So it's really a bug then. Had anybody experienced that? What version are you playing? There is no patch on bethesda site yet... That's pretty annoying, I spent 32 hours playing this character!!

I don't play it like fps, I killed Mr House, then I decided that I can't trust that sneaky Yes Man, so I am now wandering around and making various side quests. I just don't like the "crafting" stuff, I don't liked it in Fallout 3 and I don't like it here...

That sounds like a bug. I haven't heard anyone run into that problem yet. You should be able to get by fine just buying ammo.

I thought the turnaround was three days, not two? I could be wrong.

Give it another 24 hours, to be sure.
