Early November saw a product upgrade to Avira v.10 that unleashed one hell of a memory leak. If you are crashing and you have this version installed and up-to-date, uninstall it! Try downgrading to v.9 at:

Otherwise, use an alternate anti-virus such as AVG or Avast!

Again, only really for Avira version 10 anti-virus users. If you experience crashes to desktop and eventually hardlocks, try this out and see if it helps you.

I have to admit this may be what's causing mine, I just checked the Avira forum and the symptoms appear the same, I'll check it out later on so thanks in advance.

this may explain why out of nowhere i started crashing like crazy after playing for a couple of hrs

I don't even use an antivirus and I get the "Fallout NV.exe has stopped working" Crash. I can see that Avira could be adding to the problem, but its not the cause of the crashes. The game is just unstable.

Well, it certainly does have its flaws, I was just hoping to help those where the flaws are mostly on our end instead of the developer's end. :foodndrink:

Thanks Maullis, removing Avira has done it for me. Could never play more than a few minutes at a time. Got a solid 3hr of wandering the Mojave desert last night. I can now start to enjoy all the other silly issues with this game

Can anyone tell to me if they had problems with any other game and Avira v10 ?? Did your rig crash when playing other titles and using Avira? Because I run this anti-vir and can run all my other games just fine. It's just New Vegas that constantly BSODs. I don't really want to get another anti-vir solution just on the off-chance it 'cures' New Vegas

If you're just having problems with New Vegas, it would lend itself to just that game. If you had a memory leak, it would affect all games... some to a shorter or longer extent depending. So if you don't have problems with other games, most likely not a problem with your Avira.

I only had a crash when playing new vegas which effected the system as well, but yesterday had the system go down before I played anything..
I read the Avira forum topics on this and it seems likely to be the cause as the symptoms are spot on.

When I checked it earlier no confirmed fix was posted but a few work arounds were suggested, so if you don't want to change just use the Avira set up and head to the forums to check it out.

i've had the game crash after about 30-45 Min and worked my head of hard-/ and softwarewise to now after getting rid of Avira 10 finally be able to play again for serious amounts of time!

As I had mentioned in another topic, Avira v.10 must have been the cause of my crashes. After downgrading to v.9 the game runs stable (previously it crashed every 5 minutes). I never had any CTD problems with other games, however. Seems like it's just New Vegas-Avira v.10 issue.

I still get occasional CTDs, but these are either mod or graphics-related and never as often as previously.

Just thought I'd also pitch in and say that my game has been running uninterrupted for hours after downgrading Avira to v9.

Oh my, I'm so glad you posted this! My experience mirrors everyone else. I updated Avira a few days ago, thinking that for once I wouldn't put off upgrading software, right around the time that the new NV patch came out. I've been crashing with and without errors steadily ever since, and I came to this forum looking for a solution. Thank you so much! :foodndrink:

Well, as a final throw of the dice I thought I'd downgrade my Avira back to v9. Just played in excess of 5 hours - only experienced 1 CTD (which was a stupid java app trying to update itself) and 1 BSOD.

It seems abandoning v10 of Avira has increased NV stability substantially! I owe you one Maullis. :celebration:

downgrading, on top of the latest patch, has reduced my problems to next to nothing. no more bsods, no more crashes, no more freezes, just the occasional bit of 5 sec lag.

awesome this fixed my crashes! I was able to play 2 hours just now with no problems. Switched over to MSE instead of Avira.

Darn! I'm still at the office and I can't confirm this new fix for gamers with Avira Antivir PE.

Avira 9 functions almost the same as v10. The things that really matter (virus definitions and such) are still with v9.

Thanks again for this, I spent yesterday playing with no ctd in NV, or out for that matter. I did not have as bad a problem as many it seems but this solved it so thanks.

I can confirm this issue fix, in fact I just came from 113 minutes of non-crash action with FONV. I replaced Avira with Avast Free. Also if you are using K-lite, you may want to uninstall it temporarily when you play and reset media player to be the default player of media files.

alternative fix:

Go to you avira configuration panel. Check the expert box. Go to guard -> scan -> exceptions.
I added both the steam exe and falloutnv exe. as the processes to be omitted.
in the files windows I added the whole steam directory.
