This rig good enough to run New Vegas?

Post » Wed Mar 09, 2011 9:19 am

Hey there, hopefully, I'll be getting a new PC for Christmas, and I was hoping to get an answer from you guys, I want to mod in NV, BTW.

Processor Intel? Core? i5-650 Processor
- 3.20 GHz
- 2.5 GT/s DMI
- 4M Smart Cache

Operating System Genuine Windows? 7 Home Premium

RAM - 4 GB installed DDR3 RAM
- 16GB maximum RAM capacity

Graphics card ATI Radeon? HD 5570 Graphics
- 1GB GDDR3 dedicated memory

Hard drive 500GB 7200rpm SATA II

Price : 749.99 Euro

So, is that rig good enough to run NV? I know the Graphics Card isn't great, but I might get a replacement if issues come up.
Thanks.

There have been plenty of gamers running the game with far less powerful graphics than the HD 5570, although that is rathe unbalanced compared with the rest of the system. The official minimum graphics requirements are essentially crap, especially the Geforce "6 Series" total BS, but the bad choice of the uncommon name for the Radeon X1600 Pro was also seriously stupid (the X1300 XT is the same card, while the rest of the X1300s are practically as bad as most of the Geforce 6n00s).

Here are the two Radeons:

As you can see, the HD 5570 has roughly two and a half times the capability of the official minimum, and yet it amounts to a borderline card by today's standards, for more modern game engines than Gamebryo.

Might want to double-check if you really can upgrade to a gaming card later.

It is a low profile card, so you may have neither the room, nor the power (or power connectors) to upgrade to a gaming card.

Sorry, but where do you get that the system was in a "Slim" case? That wasn't anywhere in the opening message.

According to Newegg, both low profile, and full height video card designs are available for the HD 5570 design:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=100007709%20600030349%20600007320%20600007611&IsNodeId=1&bop=And&ShowDeactivatedMark=False&Order=RATING&PageSize=20

Admittedly, it is always good to suggest caution if any card beyond the middle of the Mainline zone, such as more powerful than an HD 5670, is planned on.

I've come to realize just how important the CPU is and an I5 at 3.2Ghz is good. (I always knew it was important, but read on...)

I reapplied my 1Ghz OC to my q9550 (2.83Ghz to 3.83Ghz) and it netted me 15+ FPS and smoother all around game play. I have to admit I was not expecting that much and I'm quite impressed. I went from 40-45 FPS looking into the center of Goodsprings to a solid 60 FPS (V-sync'd.) everywhere except if I stand in a dust devil. Then it drops back to the 40's until it passes by.

If your into OCing, I'd recommend it on the CPU. (Some of those I5s/I7s OC like crazy with minimal effort.)

I didn't really get what either of you mean, is it good enough to run, or not? will the rest of the system conflict with the graphics card?

If you want to see a picture, see http://www.pcworld.co.uk/gbuk/advent-i5-650-aoc-monitor-06852464-pdt.html

And no, I don't plan to overclock, I don't know how to.

I might as well piggy back on this thread because I'm also curious to know if my graphics card is up to par. Sorry that I can't answer your question Great Kahn but I hope someone can answer both of ours.

I have an nVidia GeForce 8600M GT, 256 MB card with 2 GB of RAM and 2.4 GHz processing speed. Is this enough to run the game properly? I guess that my graphics card is above a series 6 but I'm not entirely sure and looking at the official website does not help. :(

No problem.

Also, just to help a tad, does the card have dedicated memory or does it the share the system memory? because obviously if it's non-dedicated it might make your experience slower, depending on how fast your PC is. (Sorry, I'm not great at PC's and I may have messed up the answer).

Not sure actually. How do you find out? You can tell I have very little experience playing PC games, lol. :sadvaultboy: My specs are for my MacBook Pro, which I bought back in 2007. As far as I know the graphics card can be upgraded and I can even increase my system memory to 4 GB of RAM. I really want to buy New Vegas for the PC and running Bootcamp for Windows XP is not a problem. I'm just worried about the graphics card.

The so-called Geforce 6 "Series" is / was in fact FOUR separate series, the 6200, 6500, 6600, and 6800. The slowest that will handle this game in a Medium Resolution without jerkiness would be the 6600 GT, save for the fact it was only offered in 128 MB versions, neither the 6200 nor the 6500 had the required core speed, RAM speed, or memory bandwidth. There were six different 6800s in that series, four of which were good, and two of which were crap (6800 SE, 6800 XT). There was some variation between AGP and PCIe v ersions, so that in one case, the GS was slower than the Vanilla card, and the reverse was for the other (but I forget now which was which, and the last new ones, 6800s, were sold off 5-6 years ago now).

The 8600 wasn't a "bad" card when new, although like all of the 8n00s, when it was new, the fan control firmware was defective, and that was not corrected for any 8n00s other than the 8800s. Time hasn't been kind to the 8600, particularly not when we look at what AMD has released since back then, for the same class (Mainline Gaming class).

However, as I did for the X1600 Pro versus the HD 5570, here is the 6800 GS vs the 8600. The mobile versions of the 8600 were almost uniformly worse off by anywhere from 15 to 30% of lost performance, and GPU Review has very few mobile cards' specifications in its database:

Thanks for the replies/links Gorath and Kahn. I did have to replace my graphics card a few months ago because of the defect mentioned above. From what I read in those links, New Vegas "should" run tolerably on my computer (unless I'm reading the info incorrectly). I don't expect high end performance because I never intended to buy a gaming laptop and I already own the game for my 360. I just want to have fun with mods.

That's exactly what I'm doing, I'm getting a new PC, for the game and few others, but I have the game on the PS3, I want it on the PC because I want to aim at job in game designing when I'm older, modding weapons and making new ones seems really easy!

Get a better graphics card. I have a ATI 4870 it run better then that. If I was updating I would of get 5850. If I get the 5770 I will be downgrading. With the processor I have that and its good. As for RAM 4 Gig will be fine.
