Maybe use Steams add a game feature and use the CD-Key? I don't know if it would work, but it's worth a try.

The game cannot be played from the CD and it cannot be played online.

How does your computer run without a hard disk?
Do you mean that your DVD drive is broken?

In that case, contact Steam and find out if you can download fusing your current product key (unlikely, since they have no way to verify that you aren't just using someone else's.)
You can buy an external DVD Drive for less than you paid for the game itself or rel
place the internal drive for even less than that.

But it sounds like you have even bigger issues. Is your box even powerful enough to run the game?

Anyway this belongs in Hardware/Software

If you download it from Steam, there is no need for the disk at all.....Although, since I bought the Steam version to begin with, I didnt need a disk, and I do not know if it comes with the product key on the inside. (Or you can buy a new DVD drive, they are pretty inexpensive, a standard drive can be found for around $18 or so)

Just download Steam from the Steampowered website, and then use the CD-key from the retail game to download and install the game from the internet.

Will this actually work? How can they verify the key?

Good luck uploading a 6GB+ file through Email.......you may also be able to share the DVD drive in another PC over the network.....although if you are on a 54mbps or even 100mbps connection, it would be dreadfully slow.

The same way they do for anyone else. Everyone on PC has to go trhough steam to get the exe (IE: the initial activation), so inputting your key will tell steam you have bought the game and to activate if for download.

OP: Spend $20-30 and get a new dvd drive. Not that difficult.

One of the dev posts way back when they announced steam touted this feature - that even a user without an optical drive would be able to install the game because they could just download it by using the key and registering through steam.

Load up Steam, at the bottom of the screen click the "+ Add a Game" button, then select "Activate a Product on Steam..." option. See if that will allow you to download the game via the Steam network as if you purchased F:NV directly from Steam.

David,

You may want to check the specs of the computer you're using against the minimum required for FNV. I'm going to go out on a limb here and speculate that since your "drive connections DO NOT work. AT ALL" that you may run into other technical problems as well. As others have suggested. you probably will want to just go ahead and replace what is most likely a faulty DVD drive. You'll be glad you did as other games come along.

I am curious as to what you mean when you say "drive connections DO NOT work." Have you tried connecting other internal DVD drives that you know to work and they failed? If so, you either have bad cables (cheap and easy) or problems with the motherboard in your PC (not cheap or easy).

Do let us know how it goes.
