Disapointed so far.

So I pre-ordered thinking that because I enjoyed FO3 so much Id enjoy FONV but so far Ive been wrong.

Ive been playing since about 3 hours now and Ive done more walking around and fighting off random rad scorpions (who eat up most of my ammo) then I have doing quests so far. My energy weapon skill is higher then my gun skill yet either nothings taking damage from my energy weapons or they just happen to heal to fast to even notice. Ive bought just about all the ammo I can from the 2-3 traders Ive run into and Im still finding myself short on ammo. This isnt even on hard core.

How long before the game picks up?

The beginning of Fallout 3 was slow and tough at times too... If you want it to be easier at first, jump right into the MQ. That will pit you up against enemies that are ideal for your level, and give you access to more weapons and ammo, as well as experience to help boost your stats. In the meantime, as harmy52 said, you should look into damage threshold. It sounds like the enemies you are fighting have a higher damage threshold than your weapon can negate.

Yep but I havent been able to get any armor piercing rounds to deal with the scorpions.

Ive picked up every weapon along the way. ive got the tutorial rifle, a 6 shooter, a 9mm pistol, 9mm sub machine gun, an energy gun, a single shot and a pre-order shotgun.
