Can we cut down on some of the Constant Frequently Asked Que

Post » Fri Mar 11, 2011 2:13 pm

There have already been many hundreds of questions about crashing, freezing, and poor performance with various relatively recent Geforce video cards and drivers, when running in Windows 7, along with a half dozen work-arounds that offer some people some respite, including simply running in a window. The forums have a SEARCH function that does work.

There have also been many hundreds of questions that simply cannot be answered because the authors do not choose to offer needed information. The local Tabula Rasa for information is a great long blob of a thing called a DxDiag report that is copied from Windows and pasted into a question. However, a huge number of new arrivals here do not want to extend themselves much to learn what is wrong, and won't use the Search, or read the pinned threads, nor will they attach their DxDiag reports.

http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1123068-what-that-dxdiag-thing-includes/

I've been telling them we can't help them without information, and suggesting a shorter list of the most essential of the data, but I'm now somewhat nonplussed about the matter.

From now on, I will just ignore the majority that class of posts entirely.

If anything, the percentage of duplicates and incompletes is just getting worse, not better. Real shameful, that.

Maby its a good thing, cause its the most annoying and worse problem of the game ppl have now.
Not easy to please everyone to go trought pages after pager or search to get theyre answer.

Maby it also help the designers to see 1 page covered with so much complains about the same problem
and hopefully would start thinking to take action and fix theyre game.

You know what?? What is really shameful is the state of this game at release not everyone has $60 to blow on a game that seems prebeta so people are pissed and they are not going to take the time to search. But really what is the point there is no response from Bethesda (are the sweeping this under the carpet?? seems like it) I'm almost at the point of just saying F*** it because the really shame should be on Bethesda!

I have 30 hours into the game and am having a great time with it. I had to copy the directx 9 dll into the directory to fix the npc slow down problem and have noticed a minor bug here or there but nothing that stops me from playing the hell out of the game. I don't know why people expect bethesda to respond to every little thing.. they are probably collecting all the information they have and putting their people on the problems to reproduce them and then go about finding where to make corrections. Anybody expecting instantaneous satisfaction needs to go hit the pipe or grab a beer cause software programming doesn't provide instantaneous satisfaction it can be grueling work and often requires going through lots of code to find the precise cause of the problem. This game blows away Fallout 3 imo and has a lot of throwbacks to the first 2 fallouts that I played way back in the day when they came out. They are probably also working on DLC to make sure they continue to have a revenue stream to pay the workers. Be patient people.

I'm not excepting an insta-fix (I work in the programming field and I know how long updates takes) I just want some thing more then a post you problems here MOD thread 6 days after the games released and maybe you can play but there is a ever grow amount of ppl that can't. I agree with you totally on the game the 12 hours that I did play (before the 2nd patch) was amazing and did indeed blow fallout 3 out of the water in all respect except stability. And I did spend more then 20 hours trying every fix I could find for any problem and none of them help at all so ya I'm a little pissed off atm!!

I get what you are saying. When Oblivion was released the forums were twice as bad as you are seeing. The problem I saw is that people categorized their problem into specific details. Such as: I only freeze when I go here. Or I only crash when I enter a such and such building. Therefore the problem becomes specific to them.

There of course are the random posts. You get the "I'm running a mega computer and it shouldn't crash at all" to the "i'm making this thing run on grandma's computer". Each problem is specific and it's nearly impossible to keep up with them all, but I think the Mods know what they are doing, and delete or reroute the "same issue" ones. These things pass, and they will. Take a break from the forums and do something else. :)

I think I understand what your saying... but still if it frustrates you that much just don't visit the forums. Like the doctors say "If it hurts, don't do it".

I think the only way people will read the stickies if they say "COMMON SOLUTIONS TO YOUR PROBLEMS" or "CTD with GeForce Solutions HERE" instead of "Please Read Before Posting". IMO that just looks like forum rules... no cursing, abuse, racism, and never talk about the moderators even if they light your butt on fire and piss out the flames, general stuff. I'm sure there are codes for these forums like others that make the colours flash, use that also. But this is just what I would do...

I see lots of repeat things that the answers have been told 100x over, and if it frustrates me I just don't respond to them. Usually I just tell them what it is and post some links to help them a little more. At the same time I don't like to get a high post count... no idea why it just bothers me so if I see my name in there more than 3x for recent posts I usually go away for a while. Several were new to PC gaming, which is a rarity these days, and those especially I do not want to scare away.

He did not want a technical answer though... and at this stage without any real "Fix Everything" patches that just isn't going to happen. I think the guy I am thinking of had 4 different problems (at this point, when you fix one another pops up... whack a mole). Requiring editing of his ini file, the dll fix, and the Ctrl+alt+del and priority changing thing.

I agree. It's completely shameful to release a game this borked.

They should put up a few stickys with known problems and fixes.
That alone would cut down on the posts and reduce clutter.

Agreed!

An official FAQ with a simple if you have this problem try the following and keep it updated. Even with the search finding a solution to some of the problems requires a lot of reading. My final stutter issues were solved by using HIGH instead of Ultra settings. and when it comes to Codec issues there is little in the way of a silver bullet.

We could cut down the number of new threads with some organization. right now it takes less then 30 minuets for a new post to get moved below the fold.

Any one fell up to creating an Un-official FAQ?

Well I posted my dxdiag, I'm running windows XP, and I'm complaining about constant crashing, not poor performance. Windowed mode, all tweaks, lowest possible settings, completely updated drivers, nothing works. Nobody has answered my post.

Thats prob because of sheer volume of peer help requests. All we can most likely get from tech support is an 'Expect a patch addressing these and other issues soon' email.
But yeah making the common solutions title look like 'Forum rules' does not help many, they need to change that.

If anything, the percentage of duplicates and incompletes is just getting worse, not better.

I've noticed an increasing proportion of posts this current weekend with some questionable looking variations on ordinary everyday business style capitalization, spelling, punctuation, and paragraph breaks.

Weekends tend to be low volume time at forums such as these. There are fewer readers than usual on hand to answer questions, so using the Archives by Searching makes a lot more sense as a faster way to learn things. As the Christmas / Hanukkah holidays grow closer, additional weekend options will reduce the readership still more (as in, shopping for gifts, for instance). All the more reason to write clearly when you do have to do so, and to include adequate diagnostic information, and so on. Good Luck with the game, folks!
