A large number of people seem to be having issues with NPC incorrectly attacking them. Looking into it, the issue seems to be that there's Factions and Factions with Reputation
Let me give you an example. You go totally nuts on the NCR one day, the game flags you as vilified and NCR hates you. What also happens is a number of other hidden factions get flagged as being your enemy too, such as the Rangers (ArmorNCRFactionNV). Everyone hates you. But, if you manage to get up to neutral you'll still run into issues with some NCR members. This is because a lot of NCR NPCs still belong to other NCR factions, such as "ArmorNCRFactionNV". When you build your reputation with NCR ("RepNVNCR") back, the game doesn't seem to automatically flag the other related NCR factions as your friend again. This is true even for quests where a faction "forgives" you. If an NPC belongs to two factions, the faction hating on you seems to take precedence.
To further complicate things, using Faction armour as a disguise seems to interfere with the game's storing of who does and doesn't like you. Also, the typical hack of console commands doesn't appear to work as they won't accept either the faction name nor the BaseID of the faction.
I've been working on a very simple fix. In its current iteration (which would be flagged as "Alpha Alpha Alpha") it's simply an item that, when clicked on, restores your NCR reputation to neutral and also makes the relevant factions your friends. Quick playtesting seems to show it works fine (quests that were locked at Vilified are now obtainable and NPCs with dual-factions treat you at a neutral level) but I'm unsure how it works with reputations that are higher than neutral but still at war. Using the item on say Idolized doesn't reset you to neutral (not sure why, possibly an ingame flag related to the "forgiveness" quests).
Adding in any other faction would be the work of seconds but, currently, I'm looking to iron out any bugs before I mess around too much.
Before I actually continue, is anyone else having these problems or are they isolated incidents? The fix I implemented solved issues I was having progressing in the main storyline, so I'm more than happy to leave it alone if it's just me.
