[REQ] Flashlight

Post » Fri May 27, 2011 8:08 pm

Is there any way to have a toggle-able directional flashlight, either "on" the currently equipped weapon or from the Pip-Boy (no actual need of a flashlight model, just light coming out of nowhere would be a good start).

Would work nicely with dark areas and darker nights.

Engine doesn't support it.

You don't know what you're talking about.

Fallout 3 had a directional flash light that just came out of no where. I'm sure in due time it'll come out. The in game "flash light" is pointless.

No, the actual engine doesn't support real directional lights. You can simulate them with a bunch of spherical lights, but it's not the same thing at all.

Guess in the, what, five years of modding games on this engine I missed it. Shucks. Would've been nice to know, so I could tell all those folks who were faking it with long chains of individual lights that they could just use a proper directional light, that wasn't laggy and poor-quality. Perhaps you should go enlighten them?

Edit: No pun intended

If I understand correctly, the closest thing in FO3 was the cone-shaped "fog" similar to what they use for light rays that makes it look like it's a spotlight. But the fog doesn't actually throw off any light. You still have to add a spherical light source floating off the ground to actually light up that spot.

(I'm thinking specifically of the flood lights that are pointed at the monuments, or which were on top of secure areas. Or the lights in FO:NV on top of the guard towers of the NCRCF.)

I've never tried it but http://www.fallout3nexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=15003 doesn't look to bad.

It doesn't look bad in screenshots but it's no where near as good in the actual game. Not to mention the fairly massive performance hit. As Toaster pointed out, it's not actually a directional light, it's a string of spheres.
