New Vegas won't open at all!

Post » Mon Apr 25, 2011 5:36 am

I have just been playing New Vegas for about an hour when it crashed, and started crashing repeatedly every time I started the game. It loads fine, then I walk forward a few steps and it crashes. Tried Steam in offline mode and it just gets stuck on the the "preparing to launch" window. Can't play it from NVSE because the latest patch has screwed that one up. If anyone has any suggestions that would be fantastic as, well, at the moment I have nothing else to do but play NV.
*cries*

Have you tried verifying content using Steam?

I seem to have done that already, I think. There's no option that I can see for it anyway. I've also already clocked up 215 hours on New Vegas so it shouldn't start doing this now if I had? Please excuse my technological incompetence.

Try this.

https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=2037-QEUH-3335

If you have problems with missing models, video artifacts (purple and black checkerboards) or unexpected crashes, please follow the steps below to use Steam's Verify integrity of game cache feature to identify and replace corrupted Steam cache files.

Verify integrity of game cache

1. Load Steam
2. From the Library section, right-click on the game and select Properties from the menu.
3. Select the Local files tab and click the Verify integrity of game cache... button.
4. Steam will verify the game's files - this process may take several minutes.
5. Once the process is completed, the Check Window will automatically exit.

If all else fails, delete your Fallout.ini and let the game create a new one?

FirstBlood- Okie, just tried that. It came up with a message that said 22 files failed to validate and will be reactivated (or retrieved, or something.) Waited for that to finish doing it's thing, just tried it then and I still get the crash after a few steps >_<

Is there potential for this to cause me to lose my saves? I know nothing about computers, I just play the games heh so I have no idea about this sort of stuff.

You won't lose saves by doing that, no. You might want to use your launcher though to reconfigure your settings after/if you get things to work.

Do I just go straight ahead and delete it or is there more to it than that?

Just delete it. When you restart your game, it will create the default. No loss there.

Just tried it, still not working >_<

Just emailed Tech Support, hopefully they can shed some light. *Sigh*

So it turns out I can fast travel and move around some places, but I can't quite make it to the Thorn entrance without it crashing consistently at the exact same place, and I also can't enter the area that's between Horowitx Farmstead and Westside, I've tried from all possible angles but it crashes consistently at exactly the same points when I try enter certain areas. I am using FOMM and have uninstalled all mods, even with them all uninstalled it crashes. I'm starting to get really frustrated. I'd rather not reinstall as I'm almost finished, trying to get the "finish the game on hardcoe mode" achievement as well as the House always Wins achievement, if I have to start again I may end up beating my face into the screen.
