Why Steam instead of Live?

Post » Mon Apr 25, 2011 9:42 am

I'm just curious as the the decision to go with Steam and not GFWL, or why not both? I could understand if it was to avoid multiplayer conflict like Dawn of War II is doing with their newest expansion, but this is a single player stand alone game.

The game was released multiplatform so punish those who like the ability to track games on both their PC and 360?

(I know, now, that it has been known it was going to be on Steam and not GFWL for a while now, just curious as to both; players thoughts, and developers reasons for this)

For one, the extra certification process for GFWL is no small matter. And requires licensing fees.

Additional systems always bring problems. Also, the less accounts you need to play, the better. Look at how many nice words people had for Rockstar for not only including GfWL but also their own kind of account management into GTA IV. And then imagine the plight of people who bought it on Steam.

Certification? The certification for the Box is already laughable with the condition stuff like Risen and Arcania is getting green lights, I wouldn't be surprised if they'd just go and yay everything that they can get for GfWL on PC, given how much they seem to care about PC gaming.

If they've already paid for the certification for GFW, how much more would it be for GFWL? Steam has been negatively affecting those who bought it on Steam as well as those of us who pre-ordered and picked it up in a store. It feels like a lose lose with this game and Steam if you're a PC gamer

There were many problems when Bethesda released the FO3 DLC through GFWL last year which probably made them to look for an alternative this time.

Weird, I never experienced problems with the DLC through GFWL, but one case does not make them all. I'm just curious if the problems they had then with GFWL are worth the problems we're having now with Steam.

There are no certifications for GfW anymore. You don't have to pay anything, you just ask and get your permission to put it on the box.

I couldn't resist going for the Achievements on Dawn of War II GOTY through Live, and was kinda peeved that I had to use Steam at all when I bought it. Having both didn't damage my experience, I just resent the fact that Steam ain't optional.

I feel exactly the same way. Only I feel a LOT more peeved at having to use Steam for FNV when I had such a good experience with GFWL and FO3

See how that works?

I pre-loaded, the game was waiting for me in the morning, I got my Caravan pack, the game has been running flawlessly.

Neither did I but I think many other people did. I was just trying to explain the reasons behind their decision and I'm not the greatest fan of Steam either. In my opinion, the best thing is what Bioware did with Dragon Age: Origins which was to make all DLC available through their official site.

Because GFWL is a joke and Steam is tried and proven.

@miltos33: I love how they did things with Dragon Age Origins.

If Steam is tried and proven, why are there so many issues with it right now? Games not saving properly, FPS lag, etc.

Furthermore, as I said I didn't have any problems with FO3's DLC through GFWL but I recall seeing all sorts of issues with the DLC's for FO3 through Steam and how at first they weren't even going to release them through Steam because it wouldn't work.
