First impressions

Post » Mon May 02, 2011 9:10 pm

So, after a long day in school, I was finally able to get home and play NV. My first impressions are pretty good so far. The map seems bigger and there is alot to do. It feels more lively with rival gangs fighting all the time and the critters are also many and they are very challenging. The survival aspect, I found, is a must to survive. I liked the aspect of poisoning, food, water, sleep, and medicine are an added bonus to this. I was happy to see that beer increased dehydration like it does in real life so I was pleased with that. I find that the guns are pretty good, enemy difficulty is just right and weight on bullets makes you fell careful as to what to bring with you. The ability to fail a mission based on your choice is a new aspect that I really like.
I wish limb healing was different. It's a minor annoyance when you can't find a bag or a doctor. Having a medical brace in your inventory should heal you over time.//
A few things that I didn't like is the sound bugs where the persons mouth is moving then the sound comes in later. The meters for F,Slp, and H20 could use a little bit of work. You can live around 30-40 days without food in RL and only 3-4 days without water. I wish they considered it but it's ok so far. The idea of having to eat, sleep, and drink is a welcomed aspect IMO.

So far, I really enjoy it right now. It's very good, the mods are nice, and you actually feel in danger now instead of being a god character.

I for one enjoyed turning into a god character and being able to max out a lot of things. It seems like now most of my skill points will always go into Repair/Medicine/Lockpick/Science/Survival.

The one thing I haven't enjoyed so far is that I can't find a single vehicle that will catch fire/explode.

Exactly. While I don't care so much about "god mode" (because it makes the game really boring, really fast), having to dump pretty much ALL of your points into those skills leads to a lot of "samey" character builds...which is not very exciting.

Lockpick, sneak and Repair are always important for all my characters. Fallout 3 they all ended up fairly similar anyway, as I prefer strength in guns, not fighting.

First impressions with 5+ hours of play are very good.

PS3 FNV
Gameplay: 9/10. Fun so far, but nothing revolutionary from Fallout 3 just yet.
Controls: 9/10. As good as FO3's.
Graphics: 6/10. Slightly less polished in certain areas, others look just as good as FO3's.
Enemies: 8/10 Some can be very tough, others are push overs. Nice variety.
Map size: 10/10 This game spreads out the locations over a massive desert. Seems larger than FO3.
Characters: 7/10 Interesting character variety so far.
Voice Acting: 5/10 No better than Fallout 3, but it's not an issue for me anyway.
Glitches: Only 1 minor "enemy flies into air" glitch.
Crashes: 0. Five hours of gameplay constant, and zero crashes covering 1/3rd of the land.
Performance: Engine runs nice, but needs to load for a split second if you run too long (every 15 seconds if you're constantly running, it will hesitate for a millisecond. Nothing as bad as Oblivion.)
Fun Factor: 8/10. If you love FO3, this fits like your favorite shoes.

I really like that I can repair my apparel and weapons fully at only a repair level of 50 so far. Highlight of the game is the massive map, and the Roller Coaster climb to the top. The Geckos are comical watching them sprint on two legs towards their prey. Hunting coyotes is easy, as they rarely scare off. So far so good. Enjoying FNV on PS3.

3 crashes so far, objects stuck floating in the air, enemies halfway merging into the ground at times (especially on the road to the southern NCR outpost), occasional image hopping, slow motion kills hold the camera on the kill for a little too long (okay, the coyote is dead... it stopped moving 3 seconds ago... give me the damn camera back already... please...) and I still love this game so much. I always build a stealthy character and love to snipe from a far, the iron sights just make me feel like a true sniper. Love sneaking up on coyotes and putting a single round into their head from a good distance away ^_^ I never felt like a sniper in FO3. That alone has made this game for me and everything else is just a wonderful gravy on top ^_^ mmmmm, gravy.
The characters feel a lot more interesting right off the bat. Looking forward to every future second I play.

To be honest it feels like they tried mashing S.T.A.L.K.E.R. and Fallout together. Especially with the hardcoe mode (which is basically standard mode in S.T.A.L.K.E.R.)

What, no exploding vehicles? Lame.

The only thing I don't get is why sleeping doesn't heal you. I mean, sure, sleeping isn't going to mend broken limbs, but if you've just taken general damage, a good night's sleep should heal you up just fine (i.e., no healing to full health after only one hour of sleep like in FO3).
