Should I buy the game as is now?

Post » Tue May 03, 2011 2:06 am

I have a question, and it would really mean a lot to me if I could get some answers.

1. How common are these game breaking bugs? I've heard stories of people getting all their saves corrupted, not just the autosaves, of the thumbstick controls being reversed, and of the screen just turning black on the 360 when people try to enter the strip.

2. Do we know if a patch is being worked on as we speak, and if it is, do we have an eta? (I still may be SOL seeing i don't have my xbox connected to the internet, and ps3 and pc are not currently an option)

3. Based on the answers to the 2 above questions, would the game be wort buying at this point?

Thank you in advance to anyone who answers.

How common?

Well, on the PC version, I guess extremely common. On the consoles, it's a nicer picture, actually, and seems to work sort-of fine mostly.

Patch? No clue. There hasn't been any word that anyone's even paying attention beyond the moderators and the PR guy.

Console versions, yeah, it would. PC version, well, Not really.

Keep in my mind I haven't played yet. So im just using my own knowledge from posts I have seen.

1. It seems that bugs are randomly spread, some people have absolutely no problems and others are losing saves and the such. I don't see a pattern in bug appearances.

2. Im 90% sure that a patch is being worked on. Or will be very, very shortly; Isn't Obsidian known for loads of patches?

3. I would say so - as long as you can put up with saving often.

I'm waiting until Christmas for a very good reason: patches will be out by then.

Personally,I think I'll wait for the GOTY edition all the patches should be out by then. Should be out in a year.

The thing is that I REALLY REALLY want this game. It's just the things like having every save become corrupted and the New Vegas Strip becoming inaccessible that would make the game unbeatable that frighten me. The freezing and frame rate drops i could deal with. its the extreme game breaking bugs that have me worried.

Why not rent it first and see whether or not it's all talk?

I'm playing on a PC. I've only played about 4 hours, but in that time I've had no issues whatsoever. No crashes, no freezes, no low frame rates. No corrupt saves. About the saves: I've been saving through the esc screen. I haven't used quick save. the only thing close to an issue is I had to play around with my Logitech mouse settings to get it so it wasn't so sensitive. but I got it just right.

Of coarse, I've only played 4 hours so I might start having problems .... but so far, so good.

1: It's hard to tell at this point, those who have no problems tend to say nothing and enjoy the game, those few with problems rush to the forums and post all over the internet, distorting perceptions.

2: It's almost certain

3: Yes

no longer have gamefly. Blockbuster in my experience never has any of the newer games in stock, plus i'm already borrowing money to buy this anyway. I guess what i really wanted from this thread was some reassurance that those extreme game breaking bugs are very rare. If that does indeed seem to be the case than its a no brainer i'll get it. It's just i don't have any idea how common those are.

Its only the people that have issues with the game post on these forums. most people have had no issues at all. don't base this of a forum....

Yes buy the game its awesome.
I have not had any big probelms yet.

No freezing, no save issues and no crashing.

I say buy it! Some people are having some issues but I am sure those will get fixed.
Alot of the problems are ones that the engine is responsible for.

I have played 6 hours on pc version.

For the record, I've heard the exact opposite (i.e., most of the game-breaking bugs seem to be on the Xbox 360). Which probably suggests that this whole "OMG why am I paying for a beta test?!" thing is probably blown a bit out of proportion.

Pete Hines told Kotaku that patches were in the works. So buy it. Even if it gets a little screwy for you they are working on fixing it (all three platforms).

The problem is that people who don't have problems don't speak out, why would they? There's nothing to say really. People who do experience bugs however will be very vocal about it, thus a vocal minority (hopefully) seems like the majority because they're the only ones saying anything.

Sounds right to me. Though I haven't got my mitts on it yet to judge for myself. According to the IGN review at least, they marked down the console versions' score by .5 based on stability. 8.5 console. 9.0 PC. The lil video review cites the PC as a better choice for being more stable, or at least, for having fewer issues.

Actually scratch that, I'm mistaken for the unpteenth time today. The last bit is right though. Honest.

Personally, I'd buy the PC version now, and I did. I would not buy a console version just yet.

The PC community has a good record of fixing/bypassing bugs. That can not be done on the consoles.

A good example of this is the "NPC head animations kill FPS" bug. Simply http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1123460-potential-fix-for-npc-slowdown/ to the directory solved it for most people. Now, admittedly a console version would not suffer this as they are not DX10/11 capable to begin with, (Were it's believed the problem arises.) but it just goes to show the PC community can take care of itself when need be. The console folks must rely on official patches.

Id buy the PC version if you have a choice. I have a average PC and I have everything on high (even AA) and I'm getting good FPS and no freezes/crashes. And it's cheaper on PC.

YES.
I played for 12 straight hours yesterday, and went to sleep at 5AM.

The game is awesome.
Interestingly, I haven't experienced a single game breaking bug. Just a scorpion got stuck in the ground. But that happened all the time in fallout 3.
I LOVE THIS GAME.

I'm having a blast with it. But it's certainly not perfect.

Framerates are jumpy.
Autosaves dont work.
I lose quicksaves.

Everytime I save the game I save it twice and haven't had any problems since. Yeah it's kinda a pain but it really only takes like 10 seconds to do.

If you don't mind a few minor annoyances then you should buy it. If you want it to be purrrfect then you should wait.

Well, my 60GB 360 has always been good to me. Never overheated, doesn't freeze up very often, it reads burned DVD's, and I tend to experience significantly less bugs than other people do when playing certain games. Idk if it's because I always stand it upright, or because I keep it dust free and unplug it after use, or because it was just a good model (bought it Xmas 2008), but I have faith in it. Now I'm just gambling on getting a non-faulty NV copy in my CE on Friday.

So that said, yes I'd say buy the game for console. It's worth it enough for me that I'm going to head down to the bank today and get this credit card problem cleared so my Amazon CE order can get a move on.

I installed the game, and plan to play past the Doc, enough to access the outside world. Then I'll use that save for testing work from the GECK. I don't plan to actually dive in until most of the patches are out.
