Last call for help before I give up on this game

Post » Tue May 03, 2011 9:12 am

This is officially my last attempt to get this game to run. Any help will be appreciated; any suggestion that actually gets the game to run will earn my eternal gratitude.

Description of the problem: consistent crash during intro credits, either just prior to or during the display of the screen that says "Betheda Software Company". The crash prompts a Windows message "Fallout NV has stopped working; Windows is looking for a solution to the problem". There is a low-probability chance of the game actually passing the screen, which allowed me to clock a few playing hours with some CTDs but nothing too intolerable.

Intuitive- if comletely unedicated- guess at the problem source: may have to do with something specifically associated with the Betheda Software company screen. I currently suspect the music file linked to it. It is possible that the instances when the game actually loads are related to my impatient clicking on the mouse button that cause the aforementioned screen to be skipped. Repeated experiments will be conducted later tonight

Current state of things:

Video and sound drivers up to date. Brand new laptop absolutely exceeding game requirements. (Yes, it's a laptop. I do not buy computers to play games; I buy games to relax from work on my computer).

Things I've tried without effect:

1) Re-downloading the video driver.

2)Downloading the d3d9.dll

3) Verifying integrity of local files cache

4) Deleting local files and reinstalling the game completely, both off a digital download and off a CD.

5) Graphics setting changes

If you assume the soruce is the sound/video file why havent you deleted those ( back them up ) ? Also uninstall ffdshow codec(s). Anyway this will be the least of your problems. If you get the game running, just do the main quest. Doing side quests is like trying to eat soup with a toothpick. I have given up on the game.

Because I am computer illiterate and don't know what they are and where they are. If you were so kind as to provide me with idiot-level instructions such as "Delete file X"...

Yeah exactly. I'd call a miracle if you dont find any side quest bugs or companion bugs or random encounter bugs, etc.

On to the files. the main menu song is located in your \Data\Music\Special\MainTitle.mp3 ( back it up first )and I'm afraid thats about it...the main menu isnt a bik file or its packed well in the data files. Other few things to try are running the game with xp compatibility ( right click falloutnv.exe in your main folder properties, compatibility, and its pretty easy from there ). Tried removing your codecs? Or at least find your codec folder, find the ffdshow folder, run the ffdshow audio one and at the "dont use ffdshow in: " place at the end FalloutNV.exe ( make sure theres a ; before and at the end, no spaces required ) or just uninstall the damn thing. Also see if you can run the game with only one core ( affinity on FalloutNV.exe ).. If I think of somethign else I'll tell ya..

Too be honest I haven't encountered any gamestopping quest/companion bugs. Sure there are some weird quircks with regards to the order in which you do things, but I think I did most sidequests on the first go.

You sound quite sure considering FO3 and FONV use the same engine, in turn suffering form same/similar bugs.
I would give it a try, if it doesn't work just reverse the changes, if it works all the better.

No it will work. This is most likely your problem. It is a well known issue going back to Oblivion. Did you even try?

1) Re-downloading the video driver.

2)Downloading the d3d9.dll

3) Verifying integrity of local files cache

4) Deleting local files and reinstalling the game completely, both off a digital download and off a CD.

5) Graphics setting changes

According to the dxdiag your graphic card drivvers are not up-to-date. Go to nvidias website directly.
Check the manufactureres of the other hardware on your system.
What other games do you play (with stability) on your laptop (steam games or other)?

REalize this isnt official tech support for the game. Check the Please read before posting thread for info if you want to contact bethesda.

Check the manufactureres of the other hardware on your system.

I thought it was the latest driver? It's what NVidia website gives, anyhow.

What other games do you play (with stability) on your laptop (steam games or other)?

I don't really play much these days. FNV is the only game I've installed since buying this laptop. The only other games are what Packard Bell provided with the system- Zuma, Bejewelled Twist, Solitaire and other time wasters.

I just played for an hour or so. Not a hitch once I get past the intro screen with the click-through method. I have FINALLY reached Novac!
