Web Page Size

Post » Fri May 27, 2011 9:56 pm

For my first university web-design project, surprise surprise, I have to make a website. One of the rules is that each individual page (made using Dreamweaver) cannot be larger than 150kb including pictures. When I actually try to check the size of the html files, my computer tells me they are only 1-2kb, even though some of them have images on them of about 40kb. Is there somewhat to accurate find out the size of each webpage and its content?

Well if everything else fails you can always view the page in Firefox then File -> Save Page As... then save it as "Web Page, complete", which will create a file [filename].htm with accompanying directory "[filename]_files" located in the same directory you saved the .htm file in. Then select both the .htm file and the accompanying directory, right click and properties to find out the complete size.

In firefox: Right mouse button anywhere on the page -> Page Details.

And what the hell are you doing with 40 kb images?

Dreamweaver should tell you the size in the bottom right corner I think. At least when I tried using it it did.

The real question of course is is it before or after gzip compression :P

The lecturer has told us we MUST have images in there that we have taken ourselves with a camera. So I've taken the photos and use photoshop to scale them down in physical size and memory-size (also down in quality, but that doesnt matter, they stiil look decent, the images arnt the focus, but they have to be there somewhere)

Anyway, I found a program used by the faculty to do this sort of thing, so this can be closed. Thanks for the help though guys!
