TIM (CaD) on FO:NV

It's been one of those months. At the beginning of the month I was snowed under with work getting ready to go on vacation. Then I went on vacation, and that was pretty fantastic, but I caught some sort of virus on the plane ride home and have now spent the last few days pretty under the weather, with a head cold and fever and all the aches and pains generally associated with being sick.

As a result of the sinus congestion, I haven't been sleeping very well, however that did afford me some otherwise unavailable time to play some Fallout: New Vegas yesterday morning.

After a few hours with the game, it's an incredibly simple title to give my opinion on. If you liked Fallout 3, you'll probably like New Vegas, because it's exactly the same thing.

While it has all new people, places and quests, enough to elevate it above a simple "expansion pack", from a technological standpoint New Vegas really does nothing to establish itself as a true sequel. The gameplay changes are minor and few and far between. This is very much the same game you played two years ago, just in a different location.

I mean, if you absolutely loved Fallout 3, you'll be a pig in [censored] with New Vegas. It's solid in that regard. So much so that you'll probably wander around the Mojave at points and think to yourself "hrmm... this looks an awful lot like DC..."

The graphics and animations are looking a little dated. I was disappointed to see even more bugs than Fallout 3 had, including the infamous item float that we've seen in Bethesda games since Oblivion. Steal an item off the table and everything else magically levitates an inch or so off the surface. Little things like that remind you that you're not really playing a new game, you're playing an old game in a new setting.

And don't get me wrong, I'm having fun. Because I enjoyed Fallout 3. But there's no "wow" factor here.

Hopefully next week's Fable 3 and TFU2 will bring a little more of that traditional sequel "upgrade" feel.

Well, I've been following up on this game since the US release... and frankly, I've heard too many complaints to be comfortable buying it.
Now, with this "review", it kinda eased me in the way "it might not be as bad as they say"... but is it?

Please, give your opinions... I'm still making up my mind... :s

His opinions are not valid to me. Enough new to call it a true sequel. Not much was added to metal gear solid since the PS2 days, and don't even get me started on Madden " I haven't bought that since 05", and CO campfest "I mean Duty".

Do you love fallout with a passion?

then buy it. Its amazing! yeah it feels like fallout 3 yes. But in my opinion. not much was different between fallout 1 or 2.

Its immersive, its fun, it has Traits again <3 and you KNOW they are going to put out quality DLC to extend the life of this game as they did FO3.

So no hesitating, go spend those pounds!!!

If you enjoyed FO3 you should get it. It's different and has some similarities. If you liked 1 & 2 go for it. It's fun.

Now for my rant. I have been noticing that for quite a while there has been this undertone that every game needs to be so revolutionary it's like reinventing the wheel, or the graphics have to be pushing the limits. I can understand that mentality if the developers claim that's what will be delivered, but if not it's fine to have a sequel or two that just has some upgrades and a great story. Then I find it funny that people got so stoked when COD tossed some old maps into MW2.

Give me a good story and I will be happy.

Well, I have been a fan of Fallout since the first one...
The reason I'm worrying is more: the quote seems to hold some water, because it was developed by Obsidian... (wouldn't be the first sequel they f up, I still remember KotOR 2 and NWN 2... nightmares...)
Reading through this forum, doesn't ascertain me either, because I see all those complaints... it's good to see that this post has gotten nothing but positive responses though, I might actually not be disappointed after all.

Thanks for the replies guys!

You'll probably like this game then. It takes most of the good things about Fallout and especially Fallout 2 and places them into the FO3 engine. That being the choices and consequences. Most quests have multiple means of completing them, some of which change the outcome pretty heavily. As doors in one quest open up for you, others will shut closed. It lends the an impact to your decisions like what FO1 and 2 had.

The forum naturally has more complaints, because the people enjoying the game are so engrossed in it that they can't tear themselves away.

I'm only here right now because of a headache and to get help making a mod to fix one of my few complaints about the game. :P
