18 CTD in 62 minutes

Post » Mon May 02, 2011 11:53 pm

Alrighty... let's see here.

So, I get a gift on Christmas... and it's Fallout: New Vegas, so I'm happy. I install, update, and play. As soon as I leave the doctor's home, and go around back... CTD. So, I reload, I make it to the locked gas station, and CTD.... and you start to get the picture. Now... the game isn't crashing after the intro video, and there is no predictable action that will make the game crash, other than simply playing. Sometimes I will load up the autosave, and sit there... and the game won't crash, but as soon as I start walking forward through town, and blammo! CTD. I should mention all the CTD are preceeded by a few seconds of a frozen game. No, I don't have FFDShow on the system.

Is it my drivers? I dunno. Up until a few minutes ago, I was using the latest NVidia release (260.99). Is it my hardware? I dunno...
AMD Athlon 62 x2 6400+ (that's a dual core 3.2ghz)
4gb Ram (ok.. only 3.25 recognized with a 32 bit OS)
Windows XP Pro (MCE actually)
EVGA 9800GT with 512mb VRam
SB Audigy Live!
two WD 7200rpm 500gb drives
... you get the picture... I exceed the recommended system requirements, and all the hardware checks out good. The system is clean and malwayre/spyware/virus free. All my drivers are up to date.. infact, I thought I'd try going beyond up-to-date,and I installed the GeForce Forceware 261.00 beta drivers, and you know what? The CTDs turned into In-game crashes. Now, instead of being dropped to the desktop before I see the Microsoft popup for wanting to send a crash report to Microsoft, the game just freezes and presents me with that same crash report screen, laid over the frozen game.

62 minutes of game play total... 18 crashes so far. I've tried a few of the fixes out there on the net... the d3d9.dll... editing the fallout.ini files... nothing seems to make a difference.
You want my DXDIAG report? http://www.bongart.us/DxDiag.txt What else can I provide for you?

it will not help much but don't use autosave or quick saves, they go corrupt very fast, i am not sure why, but they have always been bugged with just about every game using the gamebryo engine.

for whatever resaon i have been crashing more of late as well, when the patch came it things got better for me, now i am ctding every 20 minute or so again. very frustrating.

whats worse is every time the devs try to fix something with the patches they break 4 more things. i swear this game ran the best for me b4 the 1st patch came out.

Well, I can make progress, albeit *slow* progress, if I move a few steps and quicksave. The auto and quick saves aren't the problem for me, and have not gotten corrupted (as of yet). I removed the special d3d9.dll and the in-game freezes went back to the CTDs.... the game still freezes, but instead of the crash report screen popping up over the game, the game drops to the desktop THEN the crash report screen comes up. But, it doesn't seem to matter if I save the game, or use the quick save. I can launch the game, look around, and move a bit before it crashes... and this is every time.

bongart, i have nearly the exact same story as you! My system specs are identical cept for the brands and my crashes dont go to desktop, ive had to restart my machine every time. Other than that, exact same story. I wish they'd stop adding more content to their broken game and fix it already!

Hey. So let me add to the issue.

I was able to play, trouble free, up to level 27. It was a smooth ride. Not a single CTD.
From there one, it was downhill. And fast - Picking up on bongart's idea, I'll actually count how many CDT's I have.

My CTD's come in two flavours:
- Preceded by a screeching sound (duration varies) and the Microsoft error window (most common CTD)
- Directly to the Microsoft error window, with no screeching sound.

The curious thing though is that that when the screeching sound starts, if I'm just quick enough (and it lasts long enough), I can 'prevent' that CTD by exiting to the main menu.
Additionally, I was not able to find any common element in any CTD - except that all my weapons had mod's.

At any rate, it would be really nice if this nuisance could be dealt with.
An otherwise AWESOME game is going down the drain.

Oh, BTW, yes, I've already ensured all my drivers are updated and all other net solutions.

Cheers.

Now, I haven't got any mods at all... this is vanilla FNV. I've also removed the beta NVidia Forceware 261.00 drivers, and stepped back to 258.96 (It was a very stable release)... I've got all the non-beta releases back to 178.24, as that was the most stable driver package for Left 4 Dead, and I've never been above removing video drivers completely to distance myself from a newer and buggier release. I may start to systematically step backwards in the driver release packages to see if it isn't a driver issue.

It sounds to me like your having issues with other games as well (L4D)? This could be due to stability problems.
260.99 is the latest driver for nvidia cards.

A few things to try (if you havent already):
1) Verify game cache

2) clean boot link:

Jasper...
There was an issue back when NVidia 181.22 came out, where the drivers would introduce a lag into L4D.... and 178 turned out to be more stable. It was relatively common at the time, thus why I started keeping driver releases. Verifying game cache and game files simply replaced the edited FNV ini files, and I've been verifying the files regularly during these attempts

At any rate, when I was cleaning up changes and edits I made to get this to work... and returning to 260.99... I remembered an edit I made to my boot.ini file when I was following tech support's instructions to repair a glitch with the Sims 3 a while back (that turned out to be a common DEP issue).... the addition of "/3gb" to the OS entry to potentially allow The Sims 3 to better utilize ram in systems with more than 3gb. I removed that entry, and I haven't had a crash since with FNV.

I had alot of CTDs too untill FONV crashes so bad i had to wipe my harddrive and re-install windows. After i re-installed the basics like anti-virus and drivers, and let my windows update, I found the problems were greatly reduced. Also, before i play, I shut down any and all programs that run in the background. Things like my IM and such. I am not saying to wipe your drive, but if you find the need to, then install only the bear minimum softwear. The game seems to get buggyer with things like codecs and other softwear that may be running at the same time as the game.

Well, the crashes have been greatly reduced with the removal of that one addition to the OS line in my boot.ini file. Since removing it, I've had two CTDs... in several hours of game play. Granted, both of these crashes were straight to the desktop, with no crash report following them. But, the game is playable now. I just have to remember to save/quicksave often.

Adding to the list of things which could reduce the CTD, I've come to learn that someone got their filthy hands on my computer and installed a bunch of stuff... amongst those, here are three programs I removed which reduced my issues to 1 CTD in 3 hours:
- nVidia Phyx (unlikely to have caused the problem)
- Aud-X
- OpenAL

Note that the two latter are audio codec, which might demonstrate that audio codec incompatibility may stretch beyond only ffshadow.

Erf, I feel your pain. Although I'm jealous as hell you figured it out! I had nothing but trouble at first with this game (almost word for word the same as bongart) but I stemmed the tide for a while with a video driver update. No more!! I have over 27 hours in, but the last two days have been Crashing Hell. I've updated the stupid video driver again, but to no avail.

My crashes: I load a save game, I take two-three steps, crash to desktop. The stupid "Windows is trying to figure out what [censored] up" window, but I can't do a thing. No mouse pointer, nothing. I have to bring up Task Manager just to close the stupid Windows Unhelp Window. I don't know how to edit an .ini, whatever the hell that is! I'm just an old broad who wants to play a cool game. What can I tell you about my machine? Here's the Dxdiag info. I am just about to get back my updated ED-E robot and really, really want to play, gawdamn it!! And please, I really don't want to have to format this beast.

Spoiler

Well, I got pissed off and completely uninstalled my video driver. Re-booted. The game plays fine. At least it did for an hour and I chose to stop. What the hell? I am sure it will fire up tomorrow, just to make liars of all those that say "Update your video card!" In the meantime, STEAM is busy downloading my latest video drivers. I am not sure that I will install them. If my Sims 3 game is screwed up, yes. If not... NO!

*sheesh*

Just a heads up to anyone who's getting frequent crashes on an NVIDIA card. Try the fix in this post: http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1151476-how-i-stopped-crashing-vegas/page__view__findpost__p__16849720

It worked for me! Now I can play Vegas for hours on end on my GTX260 without any crashing.

To clarify: Go to your Nvidia control panel (by right clicking on your desktop and selecting it).
Go to 'Manage 3D Settings' then choose the 'Program Settings' tab.
Click 'Add', then browse to your New Vegas folder (Usually in your Steam\Steamapps\Common\ folder), and add FalloutNV.exe
Scroll down to the 'Power Management Mode' option, and set it to 'Prefer Maximum Performance'.
Click Apply, then Yes.

Fallout New Vegas should hopefully not crash for you (at least not with the same frequency) anymore!

*I* am the liar. Game is STILL crashing. Microsoft is really helpful, "A problem caused this program to stop running. We will let you know if we find a solution." Jeez, "A PROBLEM!!" Who would have thunk it? *sigh* I'm not holding my breath. I am willing to offer MONEY to anyone who can get this stupid game running again. I mean it. It's worth, say, $20US to anyone who can help me and get me playing without this crap.

I'm happy to report that after removing any other audio codec from my computer I've had 0 CTD!
:mohawk:

And now, back to gaming!

Well... I know that codecs weren't my issue, as I'm a fan of VLC, and it plays everything without codecs. As far as ripping, converting, burning, etc... I've got a completely different computer for all that work... so that's never done on this machine.

Phyrie,
What's different about your computer now, when compared to when you weren't crashing? Try to isolate those differences, even if only on paper. You said you played without issues for a long while, and THEN the crashes started. What changed? New hardware added to the system? Driver update? Windows update? Game update? New game added to the system?

Do you know how to examine your system event logs? Even if you don't understand what the details of each event in the logs means, the dates of the events may help you localize when your problems started. Click the start button, right click on Computer, and choose Manage. When the computer management window opens, click on Event Viewer, and view the Application Logs. At the very least, you should see the Red X entries corresponding to each game crash you are having. Double Clicking on one of those Red X entries will bring up the details for the crash... and regardless of the tech info that you don't understand, if the crash is related to Fallout New Vegas, it should be the program "falloutnv.exe" that is crashing. I mention this, because if you double click on an error entry in the application log, and it is NOT for falloutnv.exe... that is indicating some OTHER problem in your system, which in turn could point to what is causing the crashes.

Also, as a default, make sure your system is clean of all malware, spyware, and virus infections. Don't rely on one program for all-encompassing protection. Use programs like http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix to check for some of the more debilitating infections, with http://www.malwarebytes.org and http://www.spybot.net for regular scanning and cleaning. I'm not saying or implying that you *are* infected... just asking you to make sure that you are not.
