Basically, i've been having issues that were initially caused by using VATS. Not every single time, but a vast majority(10/12) of the time it would cause a crash that I'd need to cut the power to my PC to fix. After the big patch, this instead seems to just reset my computer. This has been tested with driver updates and rollbacks and this and that, through any and every fix I could find with google, this is the one thing that has remained no matter what.

Later, as I'd progressed near the end of the game, I decided to take on death claws. These have the same effect specifically when they kill me. Only tested on the most recent driver for my video card, but on all the more recent patches. If they manage to kill me there's a good chance my computer is about to die. This still causes a computer-killing effect, and I have to cut power to my PC to turn it off.

Very recently, my newer character found a hunting shotgun(previous character already had a riot shotgun by the time these showed up) and started using it, only to find that it also causes crashing randomly when I fire it. This is much less definite than the other two, happening anywhere from 5 to >20 shots in. This was only noticed in the most recent patch, and with the newest video card driver. Other settings have not been tried. Like the deathclaw death, this still causes crashing that I have to cut the power to my PC to fix.

Judging by looking around, it would seem that I am in the minority here, but on the off chance someone has ran into and successfully fixed this problem, how did you do it? >.>

I have got a smiliar problem. I've started a new game, this is my first attempt to FNV. What seems to be a problem is firing a weapon. Sometimes, when i use rifle (this rat rifle or something, don't have english version) the game crashes, shows the BSOD and then restarts my coputer. This problem occurs always when i headshot an enemy - for example, when i shot the meat fly in the head - the game crashes. When i shot the ganger in the head - the game crashes and so on... it's pretty annoying because i can't kill anybody with headshot. I am trying many things to fix that bug, but im running out of ideas, so please help me anyone

Guys,
Your computers have tired, old vidcards.
A modern vidcard with 1024MB memory would help the game function.
You guys must run something like Medium (or Low) video preset, with no AA, AF or vsync.
It is important to setup your nVidia Control Panel (or Radeon CCC) properly before starting up the game.
This means all high-performance or application-controlled settings, and no forced AA, AF or vsync.
The game launcher tends to make unfortunate choices the very first time the game is run.
For example, for me it selected a funny, low (less than native) resolution, with both vsync and 4x AA enabled.
Ridiculous.
I manually selected 1680x1050, no AA, 4x AF, and no vsync.

Zaik, your vidcard is old - and it was cheap when it was new.
Get something decent will ya?
I just bought a modern nVidia GT240 with 512MB GDDR5 for only $85 bucks.
Stuck it in strictly as a PhysX processor - but it's better than your primary vidcard...
Again, you guys might get the game to function, but you must tune up your rigs and turn down your settings.
#1 thing is setup your vidcard control panels properly, including no forced vsync, and make sure no vsync in game settings.

I noticed you are using creative card. Are using alchemy? If so try turning it off for FONV. Alchemy seem to cause VATS crashes for me previously.

Hopefully I've got a decent video card coming for Christmas, if not I'll be buying one. Thanks.


Also, I have no clue what alchemy is, and a search for the word in a file name has only turned up files for various games, so most likely I am not using that.

Sorry, I apparently was blind when I suggested http://www.creative.com/soundblaster/alchemy/. Its only used if you use Vista.

If your new vid card doesn't work; another thing to try:

One thing to try - http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/installed_codec.html- this program allows you to enable/disable codecs (and directshow filters) without uninstalling them. I was having other weird issues with FONV and I essentially disabled all of my codecs except mircrosoft, spiro, franhaufer, creative (I have a creative sound card) and it helped. I had a very similar problem with FO3 dying almost immediately (got to the party) and disabling all but these basic codecs fixed it. Jut to give you an idea of the number of codecs on my system - I have 171 total codecs/filers 69 of them are now disabled.

I have had a lot of weird stuff caused by sound and sound related issues in both XP and Vista with Bethesda products.

While its true both of you should pick up new video cards ASAP, the first thing to try is to lower your sound acceleration through dxdiag to 'basic'

That will most likely stop your crashes and its unlikely you'll notice a difference in sound output.

Even if you do notice a difference its worth it to eliminate the crashes. NV on my XP pro system crashed with a BSOD when VATS or other slow-motion effects triggered almost 75% of the time. Lowering sound acceleration ELIMINATED the crashes. I still have to play with sound acceleration on basic even with hte newest patch, and I've run through the 'installed codec' codec disabler tacitus59 mentioned with no luck.

Lowering acceleration is the easiest thing to try.

Lamps, looks like you have 3 audio cards in your PC. Try to use just onboard realtek for example. Get the other out, and don't forget remove all drivers and software for them, you can always reinstall it later.

Well, I bought a HD 5750, and that did absolutely nothing for the crashes at all.

Fortunately, the sound hardware acceleration was the actual problem.

Kinda wish I hadn't spent the $110 now, but it is kind of hilarious going from low quality to ultra high.

I would just like to say i've been playing 50+ hours and had vats disabled because every time i entered it my XP PC did a BSOD, and it does BSOD sometimes when a fight im engaged in is taking too long for some reason , but your suggestion for changing the sound acceleration to Basic worked for VATS so far, for the first time i could kill someone using it( well i killed 4 NCR in the head and no BSOD.)

So if anyone has a problem with VATS and BSOD, try this, worked like a charm.
