What is the world levelling like?

Post » Wed Mar 30, 2011 12:40 am

Hey guys. I'm a big Fallout and Elder Scrolls fan, and am thinking about buying New Vegas (I'm in the UK). The only thing that's always annoyed me with most Bethesda games (Morrowind not included from the games I've played) is the way the world levels, and it's effect on equipment. In Oblivion the world levelled to the player, which was just plain annoying as it meant you always had to be on the cutting edge of equipment to survive (without tricking the system). In Fallout 3 it was a bit better as the world remembers your level when you first entered and retains it, but you still needed the 'best eqiupment' to do well at higher levels (i.e. Bullets didn't make physical sense).

So what kind of system does New Vegas run? Can I used a preffered equipment setup throughout (will that 9mm still be effective against Raiders at high levels, naturally Deathclaws wouldnt be too phased by a 9mm)? Does the world scale with you completely? Any information would be great!

World doesn't level. You can wander into a deathclaw nest at Level 1 and regret it every bit as much as you should.

Deathclaws and giant radscorpions at level 2.

Tip: Make sure your legs are healthy and holster your weapon for faster fleeing.

Giant Radscorpions are not your friend! If you see one in the early game just start running the opposite direction.

Before long, you'll be thanking ED-E for alerting you to extremely distant foes, and cursing it for making you paranoid by creating red blips on the radar well beyond the draw distance of the game.

Actually, the part of that question I haven't seen answered before is about the weapons/equipment.

So the enemies don't scale, but is there rediculous gear right from the start?

there will be both, some enemies and conatiners still spawn better items based on your level, but there's also some killer stuff hiding out there right from the start, usually it's tucked away failry well, or gaurded by something fairly nasty

i absolutely love that when starting a new character, being rewarded with some awesome EQ for playing and exploring a lot

I didn't even notice this, not that I was looking for it. But now that it's been mentioned I have to say it is much better this way. I hated the way the environment leveled with you in Oblivion. Takes the fun out of exploring.

Awesome! This is great news, thanks guys. Ever since my Morrowind days I've preferred Area-Centric levelling. Just gives the world a bit more character. I'm glad to see they've returned to the concept. Now all we have to do is hope they stick to their senses for TESV.

I just made a thread on this but it was burried to page 20 within 5 minutes by all the whiners who made the mistake of buying a game of steam....

anyway. What you're asking about is exactly what I love about New Vegas. In fallout 3 90% of the weapons in the game where obsolete by level 5. It was silly and left you with very little choice. This was the biggest difference i've noticed in vegas and it makes such a huge impact. The weapons seem to be more "fallout" instead of every gun doing 1 pt of damage except the mega super alien laser of doom you'll find that you can still be using the first pistol you find 20 hours into the game if you want. The weapons don't jump up in huge increments of power. This fits the whole post-apocalyptic theme so much better. for example the 10mm pistol that was a joke 5 minutes into fallout 3 is my go to weapon when I need something with a little extra punch....almost 20 hours into the game. The weapons feel more like a preference choice where every gun is viable yet different which is how it should be. I can't say enough good things about it because this was what really turned me off about fallout 3. Now all the guns are useful instead of everything but 2 weapons being trash to sell.
