My apologies for my noobness but I am new to PC gaming usually use consoles but bought New Vegas on PC and after I installed it detected my settings and recommended the 'high' setting.

I started a new game and when I get into a battle with numerous NPCs it starts lagging and the framerate drops badly

I ran my system on 'system requirements lab' with fallout: NV and it showed

I tried on medium settings and it was lagging just as bad. Are my specs not good enough to run it at high or medium quality? I tried updating my Graphics driver. What else can I do?

Can you either attach an DXDiag or some more info on your system (CPU type, Graphics card, etc.), please?

What kind of dual core? Intel Core 2 Duo? AMD Athlon/Phenom? Can you give the exact type?

Ok, your CPU is fine, but the GPU is rather weak.
Should be the reason why it feels laggy.

Try tuning the viewing distances in the video settings of FONV a bit.

Also, you might benefit a lot from buying a newer card.
E.g. AMD 5770 is cheap and offering a huge advantage over your current card.

While I wouldn't describe a desktop Geforce 8600 as "weak", I will suggest that drivers are really important factors with it and the 8600 GTS, both losing performance from using many of the very latest drivers, such that it's a very bad choice to use it in Windows 7, in which the older drivers that work best with it aren't available. It will be much cheaper to dedicate part of the hard drive to a new, separate partition on which you install your old Windows XP SP3 version, for game playing. Otherwise, I just saw an HD 5670 advertised at Newegg for $65 after rebate, with a negligible shipping charge, something like $1.99.

This was it! I was playing on LOW quality and still experiencing lag, installed this and now I can play at medium with a bunch of the effects turned on with no lag.
