Stealth Attacking Bandits is Assault

Post » Tue Mar 29, 2011 11:15 pm

I invariably play goody-two-shoes characters. Defenders of the Realm. Protectors of the innocent. That sort of thing. At the same time, we consider stealth attacks a perfectly legitimate means of initiating combat. Yet stealth-attacking humanoid bandits, necros, and select other evil-doers is considered assault. This makes no sense. (Yes, I know that unless reported assaults are nothing more than figures on our stat tabs. But I like to keep my assault total as low as possible. This play-through, at just over 1000 hours played, my assault figure hovers somewhere between thirty and forty.)

Is there a mod (or mods) that changes it so that stealth-attacking "criminals" does not count as assault? I am otherwise happy (or at least content) with vanilla assault as-is. A search for "assault" at Nexus turned up nothing.

Thanks in advance!

You know, technically iw would be assault if you attack another human being first. Even though you the player know that it's a criminal because the NPC is labeled as such, would your character know it just by looking at him? So from that perspective, you are taking on the role of a vigilante and attacking people because they "look suspicious". Maybe they just like hanging out in caves.

So unless they attack you first, it makes sense that you would register an assault.

I think one possible exception to this might be if you were a member of The Blades faction. In which case as a defender of the realm you have the authority to make that decision. Creating a check to see if you are a member of The Blades and to see if your opponent is "on the list" (bandits, mauraders, conjurers, necromancers, etc.) wouls be fairly easy to do. But I'm not sure how to bypass assault flagging part without doing some digging.

You may have to create your own mod, or just let them attack you first.

RGO once gave me a side effect like that. I don't think vanilla OB treats it an assault if you attack a bandit first.

Bandits and Necros are already in factions flagged as evil, which means you shouldn't be getting crime bounties even for being a vigilante. It sounds like some mod you're using has altered this.
